MV seeks comments on cable service

The city of Mountain View will conduct a public meeting today to solicit public comment regarding cable television services provided by the South Bay Cablevision.

The meeting will be in the Plaza Conference Room at Mountain View City Hall, 500 Castro St., at 7:30 p.m.

Persons may comment on any aspect of the cable services provided, including the cable operator's past performance.

Written comments may be submitted to the Mountain View city managers office, P.O. Box 7540, Mountain View 94039-7540, before the public meeting.

Celebrating 50 years of United Nations

Bernice Fischer, International Relations chair of the League of Women Voters, will speak on "The United Nations at 50" in celebration of the United Nation's 50th birthday. Her talk will begin at 7:30 p.m. today, in the Hal Brady room of the Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos.

The event is sposored by the Los Altos-Mountain View branch of the American Association of University Women. A donation of $4 at the door will be used to place books about the United Nation in the library.

LAVA to award $500 scholarships

The Los Altos Village Association, is offering its first spring award of $500 to two students working in downtown Los Altos. Students currently enrolled in high school or college and employed with a Los Altos Village Association business member are eligible.

Applications can be currently picked up at the Los Altos Village Association downtown office at 111 Main Street Suite 3C. Applications will be accepted until Friday and should be sent to The Los Altos Village Association Scholarship Committee, PO. Box 1076 Los Altos 94023. The award winner will be chosen by the selection committee by the end of May.

Last year's recipients were Nyssa Brennan of Kahn's Pharmacy and Renee DeGroot of Cranberry Scoop.

Junior League applications available

Applications for membership into the Junior League of Palo Alto- Midpeninsula are available through May 31. Membership is open to all women between the ages of 21-47 who have and interest in volunteering and a commitment to community service.

A sponsor will be provided for any prospective member interested in membership. The JLPA-MP reaches out to women of all races, religions and national origins.

Since 1965 the JLPA-MP has provided trained volunteers and funding for numerous community projects and services.

Foothill Stamp Club Youth Night June 19

Youth Night for the Foothill Stamp Club will be held June 19 at 7:30 p.m. invites students start summer fun with a new hobby. It will show them how to visit other times and places through stamp collecting.

Greg Wilson, chairman for the event, has planned a special one hour program to show students how to get started, to pick and choose from free stamps and to buy in a mock auction with free script supplies donated by club members.

Innovative Housing sponsors breakfast

Innovative Housing, a local non-profit organization which provides shared housing to hundreds of low income and homeless families throughout Santa Clara County, is sponsoring the second annual Fundraising Breakfast June 6, 7:30-9 a.m.

Santa Clara County Supervisor Jim Beall will be our keynote speaker on the topic of homelessness in the United States.

Innovative Housing operates shared housing for single parents in six cities, including Los Altos.

Rotaract selling City Date Book

The Los Altos Rotaract Club is selling the 1995 City Date Book for $20, which contains 150 coupons from 30 local restaurants, including Scott's Seafood, Los Altos Bar and Grill, Mandarin Classic, Cappriccio and more.

For every Date Book sold, $4 will go toward purchasing clothing for the residents of the Alpha Omega House, a local program helping homeless individuals get back on their feet.

Friendly Visiting Service seeking volunteers

Friendly Visiting Service is seeking new volunteers to make weekly one-hour visits to lonely older Los Altos residents who live alone or in care homes and who have few or no family or friends in the area.

The volunteers are needed in four Friendly Visiting Service programs. An interview and four hours of training are required.

Environmental Volunteers offers training class

The Environmental Volunteers (EV) are looking for people who wish to share their love of nature and science by signing up for the EV March training class.

EV volunteers will learn all they need to know to teach school kids "Earthquake Geology and Preparedness."

Classes will be held evenings and Saturdays 6:30-8 p.m. at the Palo Alto Baylands Interpretive Center.

March's Earthquake Geology and Preparedness class includes a lecture and field trip to the Los Trancos Earthquake Trail.

Wildlife Rescue offering classes

Wildlife Rescue, Inc. (WRI) will be holding classes for people interested in nursing injured animals back to health for release into the environment.

WRI will be needing a large number of volunteers in the next few months and will offer classes to those who are interested in being trained.

WRI has a speakers bureau, which is a group of urban wildlife specialists who speak to groups of all sizes and take along animals for "hands-on" demonstrations.

Los Altos Rotaract Club seeking new members

The Los Altos Rotaract Club, a community service group sponsored by the Los Altos Rotary Club and Rotary International, is seeking career-minded individuals between the ages of 18-35 as new members.

Through club programs, business meetings and service projects, members can develop personal and professional marketing skills.

Recently, the club has volunteered to help at local charity events.

Docent training from MROSD

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is now registering volunteers for its docent program, which provides guided hikes, walks and tours to the public throughout the year.

The program attracts adults of all ages who are interested in the preservation of open space and who would enjoy learning about the natural and human history of the midpeninsula, and sharing their knowledge with others.

Local stamp club targeting collectors

Foothill Stamp Club is inviting postage stamp enthusiasts, as well as those with a casual interest in stamps to attend club meetings, held the first and third Mondays of the month.

The club holds its meetings in the second-floor room of Great Western Bank, 199 Main St., in Los Altos. Meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. with a break at 8:30 p.m. and adjournment at 9:30 p.m. Annual club dues are $10 for single memberships and $15 for dual memberships.

History House needs docents

The History House Museum needs docents to volunteer one day every two months on either Wednesday or Saturday afternoons.

Food Closet needs volunteers

The Food Closet needs volunteers to help sort and carry donations, organize merchandise and hand out food bags. Volunteers may work from 9 a.m. to noon or 1:30-4:30 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays.

Volunteers needed for trail projects

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District has opportunities for volunteers to help with trail and revegetation projects on its open space preserves.

Volunteer space is limited, so volunteers should call and register at least one week in advance. Training, tools and supervision are provided.

Host an exchange student

Local families interested in hearing a new language, tasting another culture and seeing with their own eyes how easy it is to make new friends who will last a lifetime are invited to learn more about hosting a Youth For Understanding (YFU) International Exchange student.

All kinds of families are selected to host YFU students: married couples with or without children, single parents, as well as families with teenagers. Host families provide room, board, guidance and the experience of what everyday life is like in America.
