"Everyone loves her and we wanted to honor her," said Connie Cunnington, one of her students. "She has a tremendous love for art." Barber holds a California Lifetime Teaching Credential in Painting and Drawing and has taught numerous students in Los Altos for 25 years. Known as a lover of the arts, she produced her first masterpiece when she was three years old. She grabbed a purple crayon and drew circles on her mothers front walls. It was left there for all to see, Cunnington said. "Helene feels strongly that everyone has a natural artistic ability that can be developed," Cunnington said. "She also feels it's OK early on to paint something as you see it. As you mature you develop your own look. It becomes more personal, your own style." Barber said she has no favorite medium, saying she loves them all.. She has entered many art competitions and contest, and has won numerous awards and prizes. Barber attended the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland and the San Francisco Art Institute. She is a member of the Northern California Chapter of the Artist's Equity Association and the San Francisco Women Artists. |
