The Los Altos Rotary Club is offering $120 first-place and $80 second-place awards to Los Altos-area students for its fourth annual Young at Art competition and exhibition. The event will culminate in prized works displayed at the 20th annual Los Altos Rotary Fine Arts Show May 20-21.

The competition is open to all students attending Los Altos, Mountain View, Shoreline, Pinewood and St. Francis high schools.

A committee of representatives from Los Altos art galleries will jury the student artworks.

Work in all media is eligible but work must be two-dimensional and suitable for hanging. The club's rules also stipulate that work should not exceed 48 inches in either direction, including frame. Competition deadlines are as follows:

  • Artworks will be picked up and delivered to local art galleries for display by Monday. Participating galleries are Gallery Michael, Gallery 9, Great Southwest, Fast Frame, Viewpoints Gallery and ZYT Galerie;
  • Jurors are scheduled to announce their selection of two works from each school by May 18, one of which will be designated the award winner;
  • Words are scheduled to be removed from the galleries by May 19. The works not selected will be returned to the appropriate school;
  • Two works selected from each school will be displayed at the Rotary Fine Art Show May 20-21;
  • Works will be transferred from the art show to displays in bands or other locations by May 22;
  • Displayed artists will be invited to a May 25 lunch with the Los Altos Rotary Club, where they will receive their rewards;
  • Works will be returned to the student artists by June 23.
