"The laws are supposed get more stringent," he said. "In a few years, there will be no smoking at all in public places." The town is trying to increase public awareness to make enforcing the "smoke-free workplace" law easier, said Carol Curran, economic development coordinator for the city of Los Altos. "No Smoking Allowed" and "No Smoking Allowed Except in Designated Areas" signs are available free of charge from the city. "These signs ensure that the merchant doesn't look like the bad guy," Curran said. A copy of the brochure "Assembly Bill 13: California's Law for a smoke-free workplace," is also available through Curran. The brochure gives a concise overview of the new law.
