Parents, school administrators, counselors, teachers, and enthusiastic Rotarians were all on hand to recognize this year's student winners. The awards are primarily based on community service to reflect one of Rotary's basic missions of "Service above Self".In addition to significant community service, criteria for the college scholarships include an outstanding academic record and financial need. Individual grants are awarded to local high school seniors and range in amount from $500 to $2,000 depending on the individual circumstances. Principal David Brazer introduced the scholarship winners from Los Altos High School. Recipients are Tanya Tickel, who will attend California Institute of Technology and is the daughter of Gary and Ivy Tickel; Toki Rehder, who will attend Swarthmore College and is the daughter of Wulf and Carol Rehder; and Jason and Michael Li, sons of Peter and Rita Li. Jason will attend Stanford University and Michael, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Kate Smith, counselor from Mountain View high School, introduced the scholarship winners from her school. recipients are Colin Bailey, who will attend the University of California at Berkeley and is the son of Douglas and Judith Bailey; and Jeffrey Batis, who will attend Utah State University and is the son of Valerie Batis. Awards of merit were also presented to outstanding students in the junior high schools. Students are chosen on the basis of service to the school and community, achievement commensurate with ability, demonstration of leadership qualities, and a record of outstanding citizenship. Principal Brenda Dyckman introduced the students from Egan Junior High School Winners are Ericka Lodge, daughter of Monica and Nelson lodge; and Ryan Brown, son of Shelley and Steve Brown. Principal Arthur Harris introduced student winners from Blach Junior High School. Recipients are Michael Mayon, son of Ella and Mike Mayon; and Michelle Yu, daughter of Lisa Yu. Bill Walters and Pat Millar are co-chairs of the Scholarship Awards Committee. Interviews of the scholarship finalists were scheduled over a three day period with the following Rotarians, in addition to the co-chairs, serving as judges; Hall Hoblit, Seth Manning, Carew McFall, Bob Adams, Franz Anderson, Wyatt Allen, Dick Blanding, and Cindy Luedtke. |
