Horsemen's Association schooling show The Los Altos Hills Horsemen's Association will hold a schooling show 8:30 a.m. June 25 at the Town Ring, located on Purissima Road near Viscaino in Los Altos Hills. Foothill Stamp Club welcomes students The Foothill Stamp Club invites students to its Youth Night meeting 7:30 p.m. June 19 at the Great Western Bank, 199 Main St. in Los Altos. Entrance is from the rear and the meeting is on the second floor. Club members will show how to visit times and places through stamp collecting. Club members will offer to be travel counselors on this journey that can last a lifetime. Greg Wilson, chairman for the event, has planned a special one-hour program to show students how to get started saving stamps, to pick and choose from free stamps and to buy in a mock auction with free script supplies donated by club members. Los Altos hams have a field day Radio amateurs across the nation, including those in Los Altos, will celebrate Field Day June 24-25, during which they will attempt to contact as many other hams as possible using radio stations operating in field conditions. Operators hold the annual event to exercise amateur operating skills and gain experience in conditions resembling those in the aftermath of a major disaster. The Electronics Museum Amateur Radio Club (EMARC) representing Los Altos is one of several in this area participating in Field Day activities. The club will operate four stations, including a satellite communications sation. The event runs 24 hours, beginning 11 a.m. Saturday. The club will be accessible near the intersection of Foothill Expressway and Interstate 280, where Los Altos borders Cupertino. For more information, call 494-3806 or 961-7571. Community forums from League The Palo Alto area branch of the League of Women Voters is helping to sponsor a league-wide, statewide series of community forums with the California Constitution Revision Commission this Saturday. League officials say the forums are being held "to make the state and local governments more accountable, responsible and efficient." The League, which held an April 29 forum at the Los Altos main library, will again meet locally 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at St. Andrews United Methodist Church, 4111 Alma St., Palo Alto. For more information, call 327-9148. Junior League applications available Applications for membership into the Junior League of Palo Alto- Midpeninsula are available through today. Membership is open to all women between the ages of 21-47 who have and interest in volunteering and a commitment to community service. A sponsor will be provided for any prospective member interested in membership. The JLPA-MP reaches out to women of all races, religions and national origins. Rotaract selling City Date Book The Los Altos Rotaract Club is selling the 1995 City Date Book for $20, which contains 150 coupons from 30 local restaurants, including Scott's Seafood, Los Altos Bar and Grill, Mandarin Classic, Cappriccio and more. For every Date Book sold, $4 will go toward purchasing clothing for the residents of the Alpha Omega House, a local program helping homeless individuals get back on their feet. Friendly Visiting Service seeking volunteers Friendly Visiting Service is seeking new volunteers to make weekly one-hour visits to lonely older Los Altos residents who live alone or in care homes and who have few or no family or friends in the area. Environmental Volunteers offers training class The Environmental Volunteers (EV) are looking for people who wish to share their love of nature and science by signing up for the EV March training class. EV volunteers will learn all they need to know to teach school kids "Earthquake Geology and Preparedness." Classes will be held evenings and Saturdays 6:30-8 p.m. at the Palo Alto Baylands Interpretive Center. Wildlife Rescue offering classes Wildlife Rescue, Inc. (WRI) will be holding classes for people interested in nursing injured animals back to health for release into the environment. WRI will be needing a large number of volunteers in the next few months and will offer classes to those who are interested in being trained. WRI has a speakers bureau, which is a group of urban wildlife specialists who speak to groups of all sizes and take along animals for "hands-on" demonstrations. Los Altos Rotaract Club seeking new members The Los Altos Rotaract Club, a community service group sponsored by the Los Altos Rotary Club and Rotary International, is seeking career-minded individuals between the ages of 18-35 as new members. Through club programs, business meetings and service projects, members can develop personal and professional marketing skills. Recently, the club has volunteered to help at local charity events. Docent training from MROSD The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is now registering volunteers for its docent program, which provides guided hikes, walks and tours to the public throughout the year. The program attracts adults of all ages who are interested in the preservation of open space and who would enjoy learning about the natural and human history of the midpeninsula, and sharing their knowledge with others. Food Closet needs volunteers The Food Closet needs volunteers to help sort and carry donations, organize merchandise and hand out food bags. Volunteers needed for trail projects The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District has opportunities for volunteers to help with trail and revegetation projects on its open space preserves. Host an exchange student Local families interested in hearing a new language, tasting another culture and seeing with their own eyes how easy it is to make new friends who will last a lifetime are invited to learn more about hosting a Youth For Understanding (YFU) International Exchange student. All kinds of families are selected to host YFU students: married couples with or without children, single parents, as well as families with teenagers.
