Los Altos Hills resident Kamee Merrill, the reigning Miss Greater San Jose, had a send-off to celebrate her participation in the Miss California Pageant next month in San Diego.

One-hundred fifty people attended the event at the Merrill home in Los Altos Hills. The social was a "send off for Kamee wishing her luck in the Miss California Pageant and for all the people who donate their time and effort for the pageants in the area," said Kamee's mother Dagny. "It's amazing how many people help," she said.

The Merrill children, five girls and two boys, with the exception of one son that was not in attendance, performed at the event. Miss Little Greater San Jose, Ashley Barrett, a resident of Los Altos, Miss Petite Greater San Jose, and Miss Garlic also performed.

Kamee won Miss Greater San Jose last November. Miss Greater San Jose is a pageant that represent 13 cities from Milpitas to Los Altos, said Dagny Merrill.

The pageants are broken down into competitive categories: talent, interview, swimsuit and evening gown.

Kamee's talent is the harp, which she has been playing since the sixth grade. During the interview portion, she plans to talk about her work on a cable television series on "Today's Values and Youth."

Kamee is a student at Brigham Young University majoring in communications. Kamee took a semester off for the pageant, but has only one semester left to graduate.

"I'm excited," Kamee said. "I hope I can represent San Jose in the pageant."

If Kamee is successful in the Miss California Pageant, she would go onto represent California in the Miss America pageant in the fall.

"The greatest advantage would be to work with individuals on my platform and the excitement of course is to participate in Miss America," Kamee said. "Whether I win or not, it was a great experience."
