It would take one game to break the first-place deadlock. With a District 44 Tournament of Champions berth on the line, Los Altos Little League's Phillies and Reds squared off last Wednesday at Hillview Field in the Majors championship game. Behind strong pitching, hitting and fielding, the Phils came out on top 6-4 and will play Santa Clara Westside 5:30 p.m. tonight at Mountain View's McKelvey Park in a TOC opener. The Phils' bats rung loudly in the top of the first. Of the nine batters who came to the plate, six of them stroked solid singles to produce four runs. Included in the hit parade were Brett Sollers, Alex Ralston, Adam Sollers, Mark Hoff, J.B. Sines and Sean Mendy. But the Reds answered back in its half of the first with two runs on three hits to close the gap to 4-2. Big hits came from Matt Kramer - who blasted an RBI-double through the center field fence - Jeff Labosky and Kevin Buurma. After that explosive start, pitching and defense took over. Tops for the Phillies was the twin battery of Adam Sollers (pitcher) and Brett Sollers (catcher), second baseman Mendy (several nice grabs) and right fielder Kyle Miller (a lunging catch). Adam Sollers fired a complete-game victory, scattering six hits and striking out two. For the Reds, relief pitcher Kramer retired 12 of the 15 batters he faced and struck out four, including two with his hanging curveball. Hot in the field were shortstops Justin Sugimoto and Daniel Hoffman, who switched over from pitcher in the third. Kramer and Hoffman also accounted for the Reds' other two runs. In the third, Kramer lined another double to the fence and scored on an error; and in the fifth, Hoffman scored on Kramer's fielder's choice. Also in the fifth, twin doubles from Hoff and Sines scored a run for the Phils; its other run came on an error in the second.
