Child safety

printer friendly version Print this story

at Hillview

As the mother of three young boys, I love the Hillview Recreation Center and the plethora of classes to choose from.

We waited about a half hour before a phone call was made to Hillview Recreation and discovered, there was a misprint in the schedule and the camp didn't start until the next week.

What I was shocked to realize is that children are often dropped off without the parents or caregivers checking them in. In this case, Hillview sent someone over to make sure we all knew the situation and to open up a classroom where child care could be provided until the unaccompanied children were picked up. When I asked the person from Hillview if this was normal to have many unaccompanied children for these classes, she replied that it happened very often and they did the best they could to make sure the children were not left unattended.

I applaud Hillview's commitment to our children's safety, but where are these parent's and caregivers?

The point is this - even though we often feel insulated from the awful crimes we hear about relating to children, we are not immune to them. Kidnapping, molestation, other forms of abuse, not to mention what trouble curiosity might lure the children into, should always be considered. Child molesters and abusers are creatures of opportunity and where better to prey than in our public parks.

It is up to us, the parents and residents, regardless of our time schedules or current crises, to ensure the health and welfare of our children and to not place them in situations where they may be at risk

Los Altos

A note to businesses

about the festival

On behalf of the Los Altos Village Association and myself, we would like to invite you to join us for the 16th Annual Downtown Los Altos Arts & Wine Festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 8 and 9.

The funds raised at the Festival are used to promote and enhance the Downtown Village with various family events, beautification efforts and advertising.

We hope that you can look at these two days as ways to support downtown Los Altos. Thousands will be seeing our town and your business-take advantage of this business opportunity by offering specials that day or an offer that will bring customers back for future dates.

We have an expanded Children's Area in the parking lot between CityBank and Costume Bank. There will be a bike valet area on Third Street behind the beer truck on Main Street.

Second and Third Streets (between State and Main) and the Central Plaza will be posted with signs signaling no parking after 6 p.m. on Friday July 7. Please do your best to inform your customers about this closure.

Main and State Streets will be closed to traffic and parking after 2 a.m. Saturday morning, July 8. Everything will remain closed until approximately 9 p.m. on Sunday evening, July 9.

With the large attendance, parking is difficult: Central Plaza between First and Second will have some all day parking for employees and Central Plazas between Second, Third and Fourth is closed to everything but emergency vehicles. All other plaza areas are open for parking.

Thank you again from myself and the entire Association for your continued support.
