St. Simon school graduates 67 into high school

St. Simon School, Los Altos awarded diplomas to 67 graduating eighth-graders at the school's 29th commencement exercises held June 3 at St. Simon Church, 1840 Grant Road, in Los Altos.

The Rev. Ludwig Andre presented diplomas as graduates were announced by Principal Sister Mary Glackin, I.H.M. The seventh annual Father James L. Spooncer Scholarship of $1,000 established by the late founding pastor of St. Simon Church was presented to Daniel Carlson "for characterizing the qualities demonstrated by Father Spooncer."

Top scholarship awards presented by the Parish Life Group were given to four students who achieved the highest grade point averages: Michael Atkinson, John Ross Garibaidi, Darcy Lima and Elizabeth Leemhuis.

The American Legion Awards for leadership, honor, scholarship atid service were given to Chris Isola and Colleen Straw, with honorable mention to John Ross Garibaldi and Elizabeth Leemhuis.

The sixth annual Wally Van Dyck Memorial Award to two students characterizing the similar values of the late Dr. Van Dyck was presented to Jason Kenney and Angela Hope.

Distinguished honors were awarded to Michael Atkinson, Danny Carlson, John Ross Garibaidi, Michelle Haugh, Christopher Isola, Elizabeth Leemhuis, Darcy Lima, Danny North, Colleen Straw and Kevin Yost.

St. Simon School effort honors were presented to Adrianna Craff, Lori Evans, Laura Fairchild, Christina Hirsch, Lindsay Jochims, Eric Johnston, Kurtis Kludt, Andrea Mills, Annie Tepe, Nathaniel Tjoa, Jodi Val and Marisa Vladislavich.

The School Effort Award went to Eric Johnston and Lori Evans. The Principal's Award went to Adrian Bautista. Cenificates and pins for educational excellence under the Presidential Academic Fitness Program were presented to Michael Atkinson, John Ross Garibaldi, Christopher Isola, Elizabeth Leembuis, Darcy Lima, Danny North and Colleen Straw.

Presidential outstanding effort academic certificates and pins were presented to Laura Fairchild and Lindsay Jochims.

Michael Atkinson and Darcy Lima were presented first place and honorable mention awards respectively in a national math contest conducted for 3,000 junior high students in 112 schools taught by The Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Atkinson received a $200 savings bond and Lima a certificate.

Four of the graduates were recognized as honor applicants by St. Francis High School: Michael Atkinson, Christopher Isola, Darcy Lima and Nathaniel Tjoa.

A Presentation High School Academic Excellence Award was granted Elizabeth Leemhuis and James Flaagan was recognized by Archbishop Mitty High School for outstanding achievement in mathematics.

Other awards bestowed included: Perfect Attendance: Adrian Bautista, Andrew Duggan, John Ross Garibaldi, Colleen Straw, Artur Studzinski and Nathaniel Tjoa; Student Council Awards: Danny Carlson, Eric Johnston, Joey Becker and J.R. Garibaidi; Parish Community Awards: Joey Becker, Daniel Helmhold, Chris Isola, Lindsay Jochims, Eric Johnston and Kevin Yost; and Outstanding Athletes: Michael Juco, Kerry Blaschke, Chuck Noble, Michael Atkinson, Cindy and Chrissy Hirsch, and Missy Bommarito.

St. Simon Church Altar Server awards went to: Michael Atkinson, Joey Becker, David Bo, Danny Carlson, Sean Carey, Eric Forsberg, Chris Isola, Eric Johnston, Michael Juco, Liz Leemhuis, Nick Navarro, Chuck Noble, Danny North, Doug Wright, Kevin Yost and Matt Young; Choir Service Award was received by Kevin Yost.
