Los Altos resident Naomi Tickle will tell you that the key to knowing a person is no more than skin-deep.

Tickle's just-released book, "It's All In The Face" reveals the art of face-studying as an accurate way of judging someone's personality. Tickle will have a book signing from 7:30-9 p.m. Aug. 17 at Heintzelman's Bookstore, 205 State St., Los Altos.

The relationship of a facial structure to a person's personality has intrigued and puzzled scientists since early times, Tickle said. The study of faces started in China and Greece and the Roman Empire made it a respected profession. In England, during the reign of Elizabeth I, the practice was considered a threat to authorities and punishable by whipping. Today, the study of face-reading is called personology.

Tickle came across the study about 15 years ago and took an extensive course at the Interstate College of Personology in Santa Cruz. Tickle said expert face-readers, of which she claims to be one, are usually right-on in their judgments. She said behavior traits predicted by facial features have been statistically tested and found to be 92 percent accurate. Tickle added the study of personology is useful in sales because sales people can size up their potential customers in a mere 30 seconds.

According to Tickle, masters of the technique build new relationships and provide faster, more efficient communication. Face-readers, she said, can tell if a person is skeptical, analytical, impulsive, concise versus verbose, and how a person processes information.

In addition to the selling field, personology is used in jury selection, team-building in business and in private schools to determine student abilities.

Tickle will give a free face reading at the book signing for every person purchasing her new book.
