Seven Los Altos-area residents were awarded cash prizes for their outstanding scores during a recent competition conducted by the Bay Area Mathematics and Science Alliance (BAMSA).

The competition was open to any Bay Area high school junior or senior. The students with the highest cumulative scores were awarded a plaque and cash prizes up to $1,000.

Leland Chang, of Homestead High School, received a $300 award; Robert Armitage, also of Homestead, received a $150 award; Henry Hsieh, of Gunn High School, received a $800 award; David Marin, of Los Altos High School, received a $700 award; Los Altos Hills resident Gary Sawka of Gunn High School, received a $500 award; Los Altos resident Spencer Peng, of Homestead High School, received a $400 award; and Clifford Chen, of Homestead High School, received a $200 award.

BAMSA is in need of volunteers to help with the competition. Volunteers help with the examinations, writing, test generation, test grading, hospitality, proctoring and record keeping.

A single training Saturday session is required for all volunteers. For more information call Gareth Wong at (408) 378-7705.
