Los Altos Councilwoman Marge Bruno has been named chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. This 20-member group makes the policy and adopts the rules that control the air quality in nine Bay Area counties.

"My approach is a common-sense approach," Bruno said. "I want to look at the cost effectiveness of various air quality regulations while not compromising the health of Bay Area residents."

Bruno joined the board in 1992 and served as vice chairwoman this past year. Three others from Santa Clara County also sit on the board: county supervisor Jim Beall; Trixie Johnson, San Jose City Council member; and Barbara Koppel, Cupertino City Council member.

"This is a prestigious committee," said Teresa Galvin Lee, director of public relations for the Bay Area Air Quality District. "It's a chance to meet colleagues throughout the area."

The committee meets twice a month, and members receive $100 per meeting, plus expenses.

A county's population determines its representation on the committee. Alameda and Santa Clara counties, the two largest of the nine counties, each have four representatives.

"We all breathe the same air," Bruno said. "This is an opportunity to improve air quality in the entire nine-county region."
