The anniversary party was held at the Anderson's home in Los Altos. The occasion was hosted by their son Richard Anderson and his wife Clarice, with the help of the grandchildren, Patrice Anderson and Todd Anderson. Bert, a native of Fruitvale, moved to Mountain View in 1919, and Evelyn, a native of Elk Point, S.D., moved to Mountain View with her family in 1918 at age 11. Both families attended the SDA Church in Mountain View where the couple first met in 1922 and became friends. Bert proposed to Evelyn on the front porch of her family home at 282 Bailey Ave., where it still stands today. She was 15 and he was 20. While waiting to marry until she was 18, Bert decided to build a house for them at 425 Palo Alto Ave. in Mountain View. That house is standing and occupied today. The Andersons were married on July 28, 1925 at her parent's home on Bailey Avenue. Money was scarce and they were not able to afford a photographer. The first night of their honeymoon was spent at the St. James Hotel in San Jose. The hotel burnt down the next night and they were off to Yosemite where they camped and drove the backroads to Lake Tahoe for their honeymoon. In 1940, Bert built their present home on Vista Grande Avenue in Los Altos and they have lived there ever since. They said their friends at the time could not understand why they would want to build so far out of town among the apricot orchards, dairies and farm lands. The Andersons have been Los Altos residents for 55 years. - Clyde Noel |
