MV-LA teachers get out in the world under new program

Even before the students return, instructors at Mountain View High School (MVHS) will be hard at work this fall as part of an innovative "In a New World for a Day" program.

Developed by former MVHS Principal Steve Hope, the first-year program will send 66 teachers out Aug. 24 to visit both large and small companies, including Intel, Channel 11, The Computer Store and the Superior Court in Redwood City to identify the skills students need for success in a variety of work settings.

"It's similar to the 'Principal for a Day' program in reverse," Hope said. "We feel it's imperative to maintain our connections with the business community. What our teachers bring back will help us better prepare our students for the world they face after high school."

Each teacher will receive a questionnaire asking for detailed information on what employers are looking for and where they feel potential employees need more training, Hope said. Following the program, teachers will get together for a "debriefing" session.

"We're trying to respond to people who say that American schools are falling behind in teaching the skills used in the business world," Hope said. "We are hoping to find out exactly what industry wants and needs from our students."

If successful, the program may become an annual one. For more information, call the district at 940-4650.
