Burma Shave signs/ at Rancho went

The police said/ city laws were bent.

Los Altos police didn't appreciate Rancho promotion manager, Joel Goldfus' idea of placing red and white Burma Shave type signs in the Foothill Expressway median-strip last Tuesday. Fifteen minutes after they were installed, they were removed and Goldfus was admonished for walking across the expressway.

The promotion was Goldfus' brainchild to keep attention on Rancho Shopping Center merchants during the construction of Andronico's supermarket opening in the fall. The Burma Shave contest response was lively with 65 people sending in more than 200 rhymes.

The winning entry for the shopping center's contest was: Rancho's Firing Up The Action/Andronico's The New Attraction. The winning author, Bob Katzive of Palo Alto, will receive $100 for his winning entry.

Carol Curran, Los Altos city economic development coordinator, accepted the blame for the mix-up. She gave permission to the Rancho merchants Association to post signs along Foothill Expressway, but not in the median strip.

Two years ago during the Main Street repaving project, the city gave permission to allow signs along Foothill Expressway telling shoppers that Main Street was open for business.

According to Goldfus, the signs are now in storage, but they will be requesting a special permit to display them some place. Winning Burma Shave rhymes will be displayed at Rancho for the annual "Rock Back the Clock" promotion Sept. 8.
