The inaugural event in Los Altos' new Bus Barn Theater will be "An Evening of Musical Enchantment," featuring singing actress Diane Squires. Starting at 8 p.m. Sept. 9, soprano Squires will present her first performance since graduating from the New England Conservatory of Music this past spring.

The building, located at 97 Hillview Ave., will feature live theater in Los Altos this winter with The Bus Barn Stage Company and the Los Altos Youth Theatre. The Bus Barn Theater is the former Los Altos Conservatory Theatre (L'ACT) building. L'ACT organizers closed operations last December after 18 seasons.

A graduate of Los Altos High School and an accomplished alumnus of Los Altos Youth Theatre (LAYT), Squires sang her first leading role with LAYT in 1989 as Maria in "The Sound of Music." She also earned praise for her dual performance as the widow Corney and the straw seller in "Oliver" in another LAYT performance.

During her four years in Boston where she received her bachelor's degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, Squires kept busy singing opera.

Her repertoire covers title roles in Opera such as "Lakme" and "The Ballard of Baby Doe."

Squires also starred in performances such as her favorite part, Cunegonde in "Candide," Marian in "The Music Man" and Anna in "The King and I." In October, she will perform the role of Monica in Menotti's "The Medium."

Accompanied by pianist Larry Crummer, "An Evening in Musical Enchantment" will feature Squires singing her favorite music from "Phantom of the Opera," "Sweeney Todd," "Into the Woods," "Guys and Dolls" and "The Secret Garden."

Proceeds from the performance will benefit the Los Altos Youth Theatre. For more information on this performance, call 941-0950, ext. 301.
