The scheduled 3 p.m. parade celebrates the completion, set for tomorrow, of a monthlong repaving/renovation project. Some details, such as landscaping, may not be completed, said Carol Curran, economic development coordinator for the city of Los Altos. "But the city will be open to vehicular traffic and parking," Curran said. Mayor Bob Gray will cut a ribbon at 3 p.m., and then the parade will begin at First Street. LAVA is inviting city council members as well as the candidates for city council and their supporters to walk in the parade. There will be an antique fire engine, and planners are also trying to arrange for a band that will march in the parade and then play a free concert in the Community Plaza after the parade. On Monday, four days before the completion date, brick pavers at the intersections were scheduled to go down, wheelchair ramps were to be installed and the end was in sight for the renovation work on State Street. "We should finish on time, Aug. 31," said Ken Staats, the project engineer from the Los Altos City engineering department who is overseeing the State Street work. The last stages of the work were "the tedious work, the finish work, like the lines on the sidewalk. You have to get them straight," Staats said. "And the concrete has to be the right finish. The lines in the brick pavers have to be straight, too." Curran said she hopes people will stay after the parade and shop "State Street, that great street." |
