Community health care

topic of League forum

How do changes to Medicare and HMOs affect patients, physicians and hospitals? Are HMOs a good deal? What is the future of El Camino Hospital?

The League of Women Voters of Los Altos-Mountain View and the Los Altos Main Library are sponsoring a health care forum 10 a.m. to noon Saturday from at the Los Altos Main Library, 13 S. San Antonio Road in Los Altos. The forum will offer answers to these important questions as well as other questions that you might have from a panel of health care experts serving our communities of Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, and parts of Cupertino and Sunnyvale.

Hidden Villa begins

environmental forum

David Helvarg, author of "The War Against the Greens," will be the keynote speaker at the first in a series of community forums to be held at Foothill College on Sunday from 4-6 p.m. The forum will be held in room F-12.

Sponsored by Hidden Villa and co-hosts The Committee for Green Foothills, Bay Area Action, and the Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter, the forum, titled "Environmental Activism from the Grassroots," celebrates the 25th anniversary of Hidden Villa's environmental education program.

Tickets for each forum event are available by calling 949-8653. General admission is $10. Patron tickets are $30, including the reception. At the door, tickets for general admission are $15.

Chefs Who Care

at Chef Chu's

Chef Chu's will once again provide the Chefs Who Care September benefit dinner for the Community Service Agency of Mountain View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills. Dinners are scheduled for 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday.

When Chef Chu's is featured as the benefit dinner, two seatings are necessary for the demand, organizers said, based on past Chefs Who Care benefits at Chef Chu's.

The price is $16.50, not including the gratuity, and $8 of the price of each dinner will be donated to Community Services Agency's Community Kitchen. The Community Kitchen serves hot meals four nights a week to homeless and low-income individuals and families.

Chef Chu's is located at 1067 N. San Antonio Road in Los Altos. Reservations are required.

Foothill Stamp Club

changes location

The Foothill Stamp Club is changing its meeting place from Great Western Bank to to the Los Altos Bank, 30 Whitney Ave., Suite 1. The new location accommodates members who are unable to navigate stairs. Access is from street parking or from the parking garage to ground level by elevator.

The club meets regularly the first and third Monday of every month 7:30-9:30 p.m. Longtime collectors and novices alike are invited to the meetings.

Federated Woman's Club

holds first meeting

The Federated Woman's Club of Los Altos will hold its first meeting of the year today at the Holiday Inn, 625 El Camino Real, in Palo Alto.

Music from Ann Peterson and Polly Doolittle, who will play Elizabethan pieces on the harpsichord, drum and recorder, will be the entertainment for the afternoon.

Members are encouraged to bring guests. Membership in the club, a non-profitable charitable organization since 1957, is open to all women in the area.

Steve Young to lead

Jazzercise fund-raiser

The third annual Jazzercise To Beat Breast Cancer fund-raiser is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Foothill College gymnasium in Los Altos Hills.

The event benefits the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment. The fund-raiser includes two Jazzercise classes, a wellness fair focusing on education and early detection of breast cancer, and refreshments. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young, a Los Altos Hills resident, will kick off the event at 1 p.m.

Villa Siena observes

30th anniversary

An open house commemorating Villa Siena's three decades of providing housing and care for the elderly takes place Sunday at the Mountain View retirement manor.

Visitors are invited to join with residents in a celebration beginning with Mass at 11 a.m. followed by a two-hour garden reception.

Rated a leading facility for the aged, today's community of 46 residents and eight sisters formed its roots with the purchase of a four-acre estate by the Dominican Sisters of Oakford on Sept. 10, 1965. The retirement manor began in a large Tutor-style home and expanded over the years to five buildings.

Villa Siena is located at 1855 Miramonte Ave., in Mountain View.

Environmental

Volunteers training

Environmental Volunteers, which has been teaching school children about natural science for 23 years locally, is offering training classes for prospective volunteers.

EV is offering a 14-week daytime extended training class that covers seven different programs for teaching natural science. Classes meet every Wednesday from Sept. 13 through Dec. 13, 9:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at various locations throughout Santa Clara County. Class fee is $70.

Monthlong courses are held Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays featuring one environmental subject. September features forest and foothill ecology. Classes begin Sept. 19. Class fee is $20 per subject.

Fall library book sale

this weekend at Hillview

The Friends of the Los Altos Library will hold its fall public book sale 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. The sale is held in the Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., in Los Altos.

A private sale will be held for members of the Friends of the Library from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Family memberships are available at the library for $5 per family.

The Sunday sale is by bag only. Bags are available at the door for $2. All proceeds go to the library.

City looking for

sidewalk spotters

The City of Los Altos is looking for "sidewalk superintendents" to walk along city sidewalks and offer locations which may need repair. City staff will provide training for the volunteers.

Tally Ho benefit

set for Saturday

The 45th annual Tally Ho horse show benefit for Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford is set for Saturday at the Menlo Circus Club. This year's theme, "A Star Spangled Tally Ho," will provide a festive atmosphere for daytime activities for the young at heart.

The event gets under way at 7 a.m. with breakfast, followed by a horse show 7:30 a.m. in the main ring, featuring English and Western riders. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the polo field, Tally Ho features a carnival of Children's events, including a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting and Menlo Park's "Old Tom" fire truck.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for juniors (ages 13-17) and free for children 12 and under. For more information, call 326-8768.

CHAC counselors

offer parenting classes

For a number of years, the need for parenting classes was felt by a group of school counselors from Mountain View's Community Health Awareness Council (CHAC). In 1993, classes were offered to CHAC clients as well as the parents in the schools of Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Mountain View.

This year, buoyed by the strong and enthusiastic parental response of the last two years, 10 marriage, family and child counselors from CHAC met and decided to form parenting classes. Classes will run from 1 1/2-2 hours during the day and evening for $5 per session.

Classes will address parenting changes from the 1960s-90s, including the problems of single parenting, two-working parents and gang activity.

for festival show

Entrants are being sought for a classic car show scheduled for the upcoming Celebrate Los Altos Fall Festival. The festival is slated for Oct. 7-8 in downtown Los Altos and the car show will be held in the South Parking Plaza, located off San Antonio Road.

New recreation

guide scheduled

The next activity guide from the Los Altos Recreation Department will be a combination issue advertising both fall and winter recreation programs and classes. Organizers have mailed the guide to all residential addresses in Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and most of Mountain View.

Participants will be able to register for both the fall and winter sessions of classes. The 8 1/2-by-11-inch, two-color newsprint brochure will contain information on recreational and educational opportunities for all ages.

Senior exemptions

from utility tax

If you are a senior citizen living in the City of Los Altos, you may be eligible for exemption from the utility user taxes found on your gas, electric, telephone, cable television, and water bills.

Basic requirements for exemption require you to be age 65 or over, reside in a household where the gross annual income of all residents does not exceed $25,200 annually and not be otherwise reimbursed for the utility charges upon which the tax is based.

Friendly Visiting Service

seeking volunteers

Friendly Visiting Service is seeking new volunteers to make weekly one-hour visits to lonely older Los Altos residents who live alone or in care homes and who have few or no family or friends in the area.

The volunteers are needed in four Friendly Visiting Service programs. An interview and four hours of training are required.

Wildlife Rescue

offering classes

Wildlife Rescue, Inc. (WRI) will be holding classes for people interested in nursing injured animals back to health for release into the environment.

WRI will be needing a large number of volunteers in the next few months and will offer classes to those who are interested in being trained.

WRI has a speakers bureau, which is a group of urban wildlife specialists who speak to groups of all sizes and take along animals for "hands-on" demonstrations.

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is now registering volunteers for its docent program, which provides guided hikes, walks and tours to the public throughout the year.

The program attracts adults of all ages who are interested in the preservation of open space and who would enjoy learning about the natural and human history of the midpeninsula, and sharing their knowledge with others.

Foothill Stamp Club is inviting postage stamp enthusiasts, as well as those with a casual interest in stamps to attend club meetings, held the first and third Mondays of the month.

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District has opportunities for volunteers to help with trail and revegetation projects on its open space preserves.

Volunteers with good clerical skills are in need with the City of Los Altos in either the fire department or building department.

Good typing skills are needed to work at the fire station on a computer data entry project. Organizational skills with special attention being paid to small details is needed to help the building department prepare completed permits for microfilming.
