Starting Oct. 1, the Los Altos Garbage Company (LAGCo) will increase one can residential service by 1.94 percent in Los Altos Hills.
The rate increase was approved by the Los Altos Hills City Council at their Sept. 6 meeting. The increase is a result of an agreement the city council adopted with LAGCo Dec. 19, 1994. One of the provisions of the agreement allowed LAGCo to increase the rate table according to the increase in the Consumer Price Index for June 1, 1994 through June 1, 1995. CPI for the period was an increase of 2.4 percent. Other percentages were included to increase solid waste services 1.94 percent.
Effective Oct. 1, one can service for a distance of 0 - 100 ft. is $28.48, and two cans $54.97.
More than 100 feet, one can is $33.19, and two $66.40.
"We are contractually committed to raising the rates because of our base structure made December 19, 1994," City Manager Jeff Peterson said.
In another related issue concerning yard waste, Councilmember Toni Casey said she heard residents relate that 20 to 50 percent of yard waste is from out of town residents and that was the reason rates were so high.
Peterson said the city is correcting this problem. "The staff is preparing a pamphlet that will go into the Town's News Letter explaining what is necessary for a resident to use the recycling yard.
There will also be a check at the gate and a note will be required every day. We will also limit the size of the load," Peterson said.
