Free gold panning will be the featured activity at the annual "Recreation with Rocks" from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at Rancho Shopping Center, Magdalena Avenue and Foothill Expressway.

The Peninsula Gem & Geology Society, in cooperation with the Santa Clara Miners Association, will bring the annual event to Rancho to educate and entertain the public.

The sponsoring Rancho Shopping Center Merchant Association invites the community to the free event.

Sixty different mineral specimens will be identified and rock sawing will be demonstrated. Sales tables featuring geodes, rock slabs, book ends, fossils and "Rock Critters" will be staffed by rock hounds who will answer questions about the hobby.

Free samples of California's state rock, serpentine and Montana agate, will be given away to those interested.

The Santa Clara County Miners Association will teach the fine art of gold panning to children who will keep their flakes. Mining equipment will also be on display.
