In an advisory vote to change the constitution of the Elks Lodge allowing women to become members, members of the Palo Alto Elks Lodge No. 1471 last Friday voted against the measure.

If the vote stands, women would be allowed to attend Elks functions, dine in the restaurant and swim in the pool but not allowed to be full voting members.

"At this time I have to flow with the flow," said Rinaldo Angelini, secretary of the Palo Alto Lodge. "Of the 11 Elks lodges in the district, four voted against the constitutional change. We had 180 members vote last night and their decision will go to national headquarters."

There are 2,236 Elks lodges in United States with 1.3 million members who are voting to remove the word "male" from the constitution.

Angelini said any new member has to be proposed by a brother. "If this passes, a woman will be treated and balloted on by the general membership of a lodge. Woe is the lodge that votes against the first woman member."
