CEO Sarnat to replace Pettingill at El Camino Hospital

The Camino Healthcare Board of Directors announced last week Camino Healthcare executive vice president and chief medical officer (CMO) Dr. Gerry Sarnat will serve as Camino Healthcare's interim president and chief executive officer (CEO) beginning Sept. 30.

The date coincides with the last day president and embattled CEO Richard Pettingill will be in office after resigning in July. Pettingill bore most of the criticism from disgruntled physicians and other hospital staff following the creation of Camino Healthcare.

In 1992, the hospital board approved the new health care management system, which involved mergers with El Camino Hospital and two other medical groups, to improve efficiency. But critics charged the system created an uneven playing field favoring a minority of doctors.

Over the past several weeks, the Camino Healthcare Board of Directors conducted a national search for Pettingill's successor. Board members will begin interviewing candidates this week.

"I feel confident Dr. Sarnat has the talents and abilities to lead the organization through this interim period," said Dour Usher, chairman of the Camino Healthcare Board of Directors. "As we continue our search for a new leader for Camino Healthcare, Dr. Sarnat will ensure that we continue to develop a new, better health care organization, a system that will maintain the highest quality standards and ultimately improve the health of our community."

As executive vice president and CMO, Sarnat is responsible for systemwide clinical and administrative operations, as well as long-range strategy and leadership. Prior to joining Camino Healthcare, he was the senior vice president of medical affairs and provider services for TakeCare Health Plan, a California statewide HMO with more than 410,000 members.Los Altos Town Crier home page© Copyright 1995 Los Altos Town Crier and BayNet World, Inc.
