Sonya Loebner, a native of Czechoslovakia and a survivor of Auschwitz concentration camp and the ensuing infamous Death March, died Sept. 9. She was 71.

Trained in early childhood development, Mrs. Loebner was also a multi-linguist and an accomplished impressionist-abstract painter. Except for a two-year tour with her husband at the American Embassy in Moscow, in the mid-1970s, she was a Palo Alto resident for 34 years. A long-time community volunteer, for the last six years she has been a dedicated tutor of both young and senior Russian emigres.

She is survived by her children, Gary and Benny Loebner of Los Altos and Mindy Loebner of Portland, Ore., and a brother, Aaron Sage of Los Angeles.

A memorial service was held Sept. 12 at Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos Hills.

The family prefers donation to Congregation Beth Am, Rabbi's Discretionary Loebner Holocaust Remembrance Fund.
