(Bill) Clarey, a B-24 bomber pilot who flew 31 missions during World War II, died Sept. 11 at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View. He was 78.A native of Nebraska, Mr. Clarey was a dispatcher with United Airlines. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Mission Santa Clara Post, V.F.W. Post No. 3982 of Los Altos, the American Legion Post No. 0558 of Los Altos. He served as an elder at the Union Presbyterian Church of Los Altos and received numerous medals for his service during W.W.II. Mr. Clarey was also present at the Aug. 9 coffee klatch in Los Altos paying tribute to W.W. II vets. "It was a great shock to receive the news that he had passed away," said neighbor and friend Vic Lakin. Lakin said Mr. Clarey was shot down once and escaped capture. Mr. Clarey was a 25-year resident of Los Altos. "He was very active in the 8th Air Force," Lakin said. Mr. Clarey is survived by his wife Maxine Clarey of Los Altos, a daughter Sandra Larson of Tolland, Conn. and a son Douglas W. Clarey of Los Angeles; siblings Thelma Hoyle of San Francisco and Charles C. Clarey of Omaha, Neb. Services were held at the Union Presbyterian Church of Los Altos and private interment was in Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo. The family prefers donations to the charity of the donor's choice. |
