The Weilers were married Aug. 17, 1945 in the chapel at Minter Army Air Field in Bakersfield. The couple described whistles blowing and bells ringing signaling the end of World War II as they signed the marriage license. Don Weiler was stationed at Minter Army Air Field as a cadet and later as a flight instructor. He met Fran at a woman's club tea dance. The officer's club sponsored the entire reception ceremony at the club. Following W.W.II military service, Weiler was called to active duty for the Korean conflict for three years, serving in Korea as a United States Air Force pilot and radar intercept controller for one year. On discharge from active duty in 1953, the Weilers settled in Los Altos where they built their present residence. Don Weiler retired from the Federal Aviation Agency as an air traffic controller in 1977 and from the U.S. Army Reserve in 1980. Attending the event were the Weilers' children, Leslie, Claudia and Janet, all former students at Portola, Egan and Los Altos High schools. Their husbands and all seven grandchildren were in attendance along with nephews and their families. Culminating the festivities was the presentation of a memory book covering 50 years of marriage. |
