Enjoy the sports coverage - we're doing our best

Contrary to what some might think lately, newspaper editors and reporters are not miracle-workers.

We only have so much time during the week to cover sporting events, and space in the paper to fit them. And yes, we often fall short in featuring every sport or match, every issue - we're only human.

If you don't think your team is covered sufficiently one week, chances are we will make up for it the following week.

For the record, we don't favor certain schools or sports. Funny, I've been told recently that the Town Crier "never covers our school" and "we should get over to the other side of town." If those disgruntled fans would simply read the paper, they'd see it's chock-full of stories about their teams.

And, also, contrary to "popular" opinion, football is not the only fall high school sport on the scene. Sure, St. Francis has the titles and winning streaks and Mountain View and Los Altos are often competitive, but what about the other guys?

Mountain View's water polo team is the reigning section champ, as are Los Altos' field hockey and St. Francis' volleyball, tennis and cross-country squads. Pinewood's volleyball and tennis teams are also some of the best in their divisions.

Speaking of volleyball, I've seen members of St. Francis' two-time defending state champion teams hit harder, leap higher and play tougher than some local footballers.

Not that I don't like football, it's just the "We're-All-That-Matters" attitude that discourages me. Parents, let the kids play and appreciate the coverage you do get, as some papers don't follow high school sports at all.

And remember, the Town Crier is not a daily newspaper, which has a plethora of sports pages. We can only work with what's in front of us, and give each team and sport their share of ink when their number's up. Be patient, you'll get your shot.
