FLU SHOTS: It's time to get the jump on the flu season. Health officials recommend immunization before November for all men and women over 60, as well as persons with heart or lung conditions or other chronic illnesses. Volunteer nurses will be giving shots at the Senior Center of Palo Alto, 425 Bryant St., from 9:15-11:15 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through Oct. 18. No appointment is necessary; an administrative fee of $5 is requested. For more information, call 327-2811.

COSTUME PARTY: The Mountain View Community Service Agency's Senior Nutrition Program is hosting its third Halloween Costume Dance and Party from 1:30-4 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Mountain View Senior Center, 266 Escuela Ave. Suggested donation of $5 includes refreshments. LOS ALTOS RESIDENTS ARE INVITED to join the Mitchell Park Senior Dance Club for ballroom dancing every Friday evening from 7:45-10:30 p.m. at 3800 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto. Dance to live music. Admission is $3 and includes refreshments. For more information, call 326-1483.

Drop-in blood pressure screening is available from 9:15-11 a.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month and the second and fourth Friday by appointment.

Financial, tax and legal services counseling is available with Tom Kenna on Mondays by appointment.

Durable Power of Attorney forms for health care are available at the center for $1. The center's legal counselor can assist in filling out the form. Call for an appointment.

Ongoing card-playing groups: bridge at 9 a.m. on Wednesdays; mahjong at noon on Wednesdays; pinochle at noon on Thursdays.

Gil Morrison will be available for help on health insurance and Medicare claims counseling from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays. Call the center for an appointment.

Old, cleaned hosiery and socks are needed for the Senior Center's Monkey Toy Ladies, who make toys for the Stanford Children's Hospital.

Volunteer handymen are needed for senior home service repair.

The center provides free minor home repair services, such as electrical plumbing, sprinkler/irrigation, mechanical and general maintenance. Seniors 60 years or older who are residents of Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and surrounding unincorporated areas are eligible. Project Match counsels seniors in the afternoon of the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. For an appointment, call (408) 287-7121.

County Transit advice is offered at 1:45 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays by Ruth Feller. BART tickets and bus schedules are available.

HEALTHY SENIOR WOMEN ages 70 and over are needed to volunteer for an immune function study conducted by the Stanford University Medical Center. Volunteers receive a full medical exam and possible reimbursement for travel costs. For more information, call 493-5000, ext. 4745.

COUNSELING FOR SENIORS is being offered to adults over 60 who are experiencing depression or anxiety. The services are free and part of a study conducted by the Older Adult and Family Center in Palo Alto. For more information, call 617-2774 or 493-5000, ext. 2011.

GARDEN HOUSE SENIOR CITIZENS' ASSOCIATION of Los Altos, 400 University Ave. (Shoup Park), Los Altos, offers a variety of events for seniors:

Volunteer tax counselors will help fill out state and federal tax forms for low-income seniors. Sign up now.

The center is offering free hearing screenings the first Tuesday of each month. Held by appointment only.

Ballroom Dancing is from 7:30-10:30 p.m. every Tuesday. The first Tuesday of the month is Dress-up Night; the second is Hawaiian Night: the third is Western Night; and the fourth is Casual Night.
