Pinewood's Liz Oliver gave new meaning to the term "guts" last Tuesday.
Not only was Oliver ill during her No. 4 singles tennis match, but she also suffered a bee sting on the middle finger of her playing hand. No worries. Despite the obstacles, she aced Castilleja's Sarah Oehm, 6-1, 6-1.
Also playing well in the Panthers' 5-1 win (the final match was called on account of darkness) was the No. 2 doubles team of Rana Husseini-Kapri Merrill. The duo finished off its Castilleja opponent 6-3, 6-1.
"Rana's enthusiasm keeps the team up - she's the backbone. And Kapri's more athletic. They've got great chemistry," said Coach Bill Shine.
Pinewood is 4-0 in Private Schools Athletic League play and 7-3 overall.
Boys Water Polo
David Boggs' seven goals led defending Central Coast Section champion Mountain View to a 22-7 water polo win over Monta Vista last Wednesday.
Coach Steve McCoy attributed Boggs' success to "getting open, working hard and counter-attacking." He scored four goals from the post position while the Spartans had a one-man advantage.
Also contributing goals for Mountain View were Soro Salerno (five), Matt Stone (four) and Peter Skeehan (three).
Skeehan also shined at his 2-meter defensive position, providing good coverage and making several steals on the perimeter. Mishi Schueller's solid goalkeeping was another important factor in Wednesday's win, McCoy said.
