History House

invites new docents

History House invites anyone interested in serving as a docent to a tea on Oct. 25 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at History House.

This is a great opportunity to serve the community, learn about the history of Los Altos and the 1930s era.

Docents work one day every two months on either Saturday or Wednesday afternoons. Volunteer opportunities are also available working in the archives or with collections.

If you would like to learn more about becoming involved with History House, please join us for tea on Oct. 25.

Minister talks

of work in Berlin

CROP walk

for hunger

Immanuel Lutheran Church of Los Altos and the Los Altos United Methodist Church are two of many churches participating in the 18th annual CROP Walk (Christian Relief Overseas Program) this Sunday in San Jose. The event is sponsored by church World Service, an ecumenical organization that supports relief, development and refugee assistance in more than 70 countries.

Bay Area Air Quality

announces opening

The board of directors of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District is inviting applications for a vacancy on the District's Advisory Council. The vacancy for which applicants are sought is in the "Conservation Organization" category.

Harvest Faire

at United Methodist

The Los Altos United Methodist Church presents its Harvest Faire from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 20,. with a seated luncheon at noon, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 21 with a gourmet buffet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The church is located at 655 Magdalena Avenue and Foothill Expressway.

More than 30 artisans will display crafts in the holiday crafts and gourmet shop. Child care is available on both days with kiddie entertainment available on Oct. 21.

Artist exhibits

at Gallery 9

Jean Pell Morton, artist and member of Gallery 9, will exhibit recent oil paintings and monotypes from her "Canyons and Mesas" Series at Gallery 9 through Oct. 21.

The two media express her impressions and inspiration from a recent trip to the Southwest. The gallery is located at 143 Main St., Los Altos. Hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Mediation program

needs administrator

The Los Altos Mediation Program is looking for additional volunteers to fill an administrative position.

The position of program administrator involves responsibility for the ongoing operation and performance of the program through the supervision of volunteer mediators and the manning of the office for a minimum of 12 hours per week. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday, noon to 4 p.m. The administrator would screen incoming calls, suggest candidates for mediation, assign volunteer mediators, follow up on cases and keep on top of city issues.

Foothill Stamp Club

changes location

The Foothill Stamp Club is changing its meeting place from Great Western Bank to the Bank of Los Altos, Whitney Ave., Suite 1. The new location accommodates members who are unable to navigate stairs. Access is from street parking or from the parking garage to ground level by elevator.

The club meets regularly the first and third Monday of every month 7:30-9:30 p.m. Longtime collectors and novices alike are invited to the meetings.

City looking for

sidewalk spotters

The City of Los Altos is looking for "sidewalk superintendents" to walk along city sidewalks and offer locations which may need repair. City staff will provide training for the volunteers.

CHAC counselors

offer parenting classes

For a number of years, the need for parenting classes was felt by a group of school counselors from Mountain View's Community Health Awareness Council (CHAC). In 1993, classes were offered to CHAC clients as well as the parents in the schools of Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Mountain View.

This year, buoyed by the strong and enthusiastic parental response of the last two years, 10 marriage, family and child counselors from CHAC met and decided to form parenting classes. Classes will run from 1 1/2-2 hours during the day and evening for $5 per session.

Classes will address parenting changes from the 1960s-90s, including the problems of single parenting, two-working parents and gang activity.

Senior exemptions

from utility tax

If you are a senior citizen living in the City of Los Altos, you may be eligible for exemption from the utility user taxes found on your gas, electric, telephone, cable television, and water bills.

Basic requirements for exemption require you to be age 65 or over, reside in a household where the gross annual income of all residents does not exceed $25,200 annually and not be otherwise reimbursed for the utility charges upon which the tax is based.

Friendly Visiting Service

seeking volunteers

Friendly Visiting Service is seeking new volunteers to make weekly one-hour visits to lonely older Los Altos residents who live alone or in care homes and who have few or no family or friends in the area.

The volunteers are needed in four Friendly Visiting Service programs. An interview and four hours of training are required.

Wildlife Rescue

offering classes

Wildlife Rescue, Inc. (WRI) will be holding classes for people interested in nursing injured animals back to health for release into the environment.

WRI will be needing a large number of volunteers in the next few months and will offer classes to those who are interested in being trained.

WRI has a speakers bureau, which is a group of urban wildlife specialists who speak to groups of all sizes and take along animals for "hands-on" demonstrations.

Los Altos Rotaract Club

seeking new members

The Los Altos Rotaract Club, a community service group sponsored by the Los Altos Rotary Club and Rotary International, is seeking career-minded individuals between the ages of 18-35 as new members.

Through club programs, business meetings and service projects, members can develop personal and professional marketing skills.

Recently, the club has volunteered to help at local charity events.

Docent training

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is now registering volunteers for its docent program, which provides guided hikes, walks and tours to the public throughout the year.

The program attracts adults of all ages who are interested in the preservation of open space and who would enjoy learning about the natural and human history of the midpeninsula, and sharing their knowledge with others.

Local stamp club

targeting collectors

Foothill Stamp Club is inviting postage stamp enthusiasts, as well as those with a casual interest in stamps to attend club meetings, held the first and third Mondays of the month.

The club holds its meetings in the second-floor room of Great Western Bank, 199 Main St., in Los Altos. Meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. with a break at 8:30 p.m. and adjournment at 9:30 p.m. Annual club dues are $10 for single memberships and $15 for dual memberships.

The Food Closet needs volunteers to help sort and carry donations, organize merchandise and hand out food bags. Volunteers may work from 9 a.m. to noon or 1:30-4:30 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays.

for trail projects

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District has opportunities for volunteers to help with trail and revegetation projects on its open space preserves.

Volunteer space is limited, so volunteers should call and register at least one week in advance. Training, tools and supervision are provided.

exchange student

Local families interested in hearing a new language, tasting another culture and seeing with their own eyes how easy it is to make new friends who will last a lifetime are invited to learn more about hosting a Youth For Understanding (YFU) International Exchange student.

All kinds of families are selected to host YFU students: married couples with or without children, single parents, as well as families with teenagers. Host families provide room, board, guidance and the experience of what everyday life is like in America.

City of Los Altos

seeks volunteers

Volunteers with good clerical skills are in need with the City of Los Altos in either the fire department or building department.

Good typing skills are needed to work at the fire station on a computer data entry project. Organizational skills with special attention being paid to small details is needed to help the building department prepare completed permits for microfilming.
