Nan Geschke, chairperson of the Los Altos Historical Commission, has announced the completion of a video detailing Los Altos history, titled "Los Altos: A Sense of Place." Geschke, the video's producer, and the commission held a city premiere of the documentary Oct. 20 at Foothill College.

The video highlights many of the landmark properties within Los Altos, explains the commission's role in the preservation of historical sites and answers frequently asked questions about property owners' rights. The video also gives the viewer an overview of the history of the Los Altos area from the Ohlone people through modern times.

The video features many Los Altos residents. Geschke and Craig Gower, the video's director, invited more than 35 longtime residents to share their recolletions and thoughts about preservation. The result is a collective narrative sharing the history and special qualities of Los Altos, along with communicating the commission's message about preservation.

The video was funded in part by the state of California's Parks and Recreation Office of Historic Preservation.

"Los Altos: A Sense of Place" can be seen throughout the month of November on Access Los Altos, Channel 16, in the Los Altos history show time slot, Sundays at 6 p.m. and Thursdays at 9:30 p.m.

The video also is available at the Los Altos Main Library and the Los Altos History House. For individual copies, call Vance Phillips, the Los Altos Historical Commission's liaison, at City Hall, 948-1491.
