Sita Chokkalingam, a senior at Los Altos High School, has been selected by fellow classmates as district student of the month for her willingness to help and to volunteer on projects when needed.

Classmates describe her as being hard working and ambitious. Through her dedication, Sita has become a vital member of the Los Altos High community.

During her freshman year she worked on publicity and in her sophomore year was class president.

Now, as leadership commissioner, Sita is responsible for freshman class council, Associated Student Body retreats and elections. Sita and Laura Eng were the chief organizers of this year's homecoming events which included the parade. One of Sita's favorite activities is Mock Trial where she will be participating for the third year. She enjoys acting out the trials and the competition.

During Sita's sophomore year she participated in gymnastics. She has served on the student assistance program, on the honors committee to review honors classes and on the freshman forum. She represented Los Altos High School at the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Conference. She has been a student representative at parent meetings held by the principal, David Brazer, to inform students and parents about Los Altos high School.

Sita likes to read and enjoys her English classes. She is taking a rigorous course load of advanced placement classes. As a student new to the community her freshman year, Sita didn't like the school which she felt was cliquish. However, as she began learning about other students, she wanted to make a change and notes that one's point of view changes as one makes change. She likes the school community because people are willing to made a difference.

Not only has Sita made a difference in ASB and other school activities, but she has also excelled academically and found time for her commitment to dance. Since she was 5 years old, Sita has been taking Indian cultural dances and in 1992 she qualified as a solo dance.

After graduation in June, Sita hopes to attend her dream school, Brown University. although she is unsure of her major, she knows that it will be people related.
