Egan, Pinewood teams notch league titles

Town Crier Staff Report

Egan Intermediate School's seventh-grade volleyball teams spiked their way to league titles last month.

The Egan boys - behind James Danforth's serving and defense, Scott Chiang's hitting and David Wong's setting - swept Cupertino 15-6, 15-3, 15-11 in the championship match.

Getting through to the final was tough. Down 10-0 to Kennedy in the fifth game of a semifinal match, Egan rallied for a 16-14 victory to advance. "It was an incredible match," said Coach Summer Henderson.

Henderson, who led Egan to an 8-0 mark, praised the group's strong front line and serving.

On the girls side, Egan downed Blach for the league crown.

Over at Pinewood, Christy Eustice and Lynn Boskie's seventh- and eighth-grade girls softball team gloved its second consecutive Girls Parochial Athletic Conference title with an 8-0 mark.

Behind the pitching of Tess Nesbitt and Margaux Schroeder and excellent defense, Pinewood allowed only six runs. On offense, good hitting and aggressive base running brought in 91 runs for the locals.

Along with Nesbitt and Schroeder, infielders Pam Aubert and Lindsay Meek and catcher Sarah Collins were selected to the all-star team.

In flag football, the Panthers registered a 4-7 record, the best mark in Pinewood history. Top players were Brian Amanatullah, Panu Loui and Marko Gardner.

In soccer action, the Mountain View-Los Altos under-13 girls Tricolors netted the California Youth Soccer Association District II Cup last month.

It is the second time in three years the Tricolors - who outscored its opponents 14-2 - have won the title.

"They just did it with their skills. That's what it's all about," said Coach Omar Gusmao. "We have spent three years learning the basics of the game, and the hard work is just now paying off."

Also hot for the MV-LA Soccer Club is the under-16 boys Fireballs, who recently won Ballistic Soccer Classic and Alum Rock Soccer Festival titles. In the tourneys, the locals went 8-0 and outscored the opposition 37-1.

Coached by Alberto Montoya and Zeilco Pavic, the Fireballs (20-2-1) have scored 101 goals and conceded only 12. "The key to winning is having 17 good players, where any one can do the job," Montoya said.

Standouts on defense are goalies Steve Gardner and Hendru Freman and Brian Pavic, Mike Ruccolo, Brandt Roberts, Galen Donaldson and Tony Dorie.

Patrolling the center of the field are Shawn Maruyama, David Cooper, Jacques Marriot, Scott Gellman and Matt Domingo, a member of the United States under-16 national team.

Leading the attack are Mike Story (23 goals, nine assists), Alex Karzag (16 goals, seven assists), Ivan Peragine (15 goals, three assists) and Andy Pearce (seven goals, six assists).
