Foothill students learn value of teamwork, recycling at garbage contest

Teamwork was the key to success at the Los Altos Garbage Company (LAGCo) sponsored Can-Do! Recycling Races at Foothill College on Nov. 8.

Students competed in PETE Bowling, the De-Can-A-Thon, Banana Peel to Compost Relay, Team Recycling Toss, and Dash and Recycle, accruing points for speed, teamwork and knowledge of the recycling rules on campus.

"I had no idea that there are so many options for recycling," said student Farshad Ghaffari. "By playing the games, I learned which items could be recycled and which are not acceptable."LAGCo donated cash prizes for the top scores of the day. Alpha Gamma Sigma took the first place $100 prize. The Parents Club captured second place winning $75 and the Japanese Club came in third earning $50.

"The enthusiasm of the volunteers and team members really added to the fun of the event," said Tracie Bills, LAGCo assistant recycling coordinator. "The support from the student body is vital to the success of the recycling program on campus."

The event, LAGCo's second at the college this year, followed the successful Can-Do! Recycling Sculpture contest held in February to launch the campus-wide recycling program.

The program, which currently includes white office paper, computer paper, co-mingled aluminum cans, bottles and plastics, and corrugated cardboard was initiated to comply with AB939, a state mandated solid waste reduction goal of 50 percent by the year 2000. To date, Foothill has successfully diverted 29 percent of their waste from going to the landfill, surpassing a goal of 25 percent by the year's end.
