Town Crier Staff Report

Residents of Mountain View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills will find a progress report in their mailbox this week from the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District.

The "Facilities Update" sent to 50,000 district residents lists priorities adopted by Measure D, a $58 million bond measure approved by 74.7% of the voters in June 1995 to finance the repair and improvement of Mountain View and Los Altos high schools.

Defined as an "Accountability Report to the Community," Superintendent Don Phillips said the update explains how Measure D will enable the district to build "outstanding schools that reflect the community's commitment to quality education." The report also reaffirms the district's commitment to a building program that will "provide schools that are safe and efficient, support teaching and learning, and are attractive and encourage community involvement."

With a goal of keeping the community informed about finances and the construction project, Phillips said the district hopes to send a "Facilities Update" out periodically during the next five years.

"Thanks to the direction of our Board of Trustees we are well ahead of neighboring school districts who also passed bond measures," Phillips said.

"We're currently in the process of completing the critical planning and design stages. We will be ready to break ground on Phase 1 this summer with the renovation of 32 classrooms at Mountain View and Los Altos high schools."

The first new major construction is scheduled for fall 1996 with the building of a new science complex, including industrial technology and art, on each campus.

An independent Construction Overview Commission (COC) comprised of community members Hugh Bikle, David Boyd, Bob Grimm, Sid Hubbard and David Jury, will provide additional accountability and expertise for the project. Recognized as leaders in the construction and finance fields, the volunteer members will advise the district and the board throughout the construction project to make sure tax dollars are spent prudently.

The Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District serves students in grades 9-12 residing in the communities of Mountain View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills.
