Almond school

craft faire

Almond elementary school will hold a holiday craft faire 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 8 and 9 in the multipurpose room at Almond Elementary School, 550 Almond Ave., in Los Altos.

The event will feature the work of 25 local artists, including toys, handknit sweaters, jewelry, quilts and holiday decorations. An 8-by-8 space inside the multipurpose room is available for a $35 fee.

Successful fund-raiser

at Almond

Students at Almond elementary school raised $8,400 at a Nov. 18 fund-raiser for the American Heart Assocation at the campus, 550 Almond Ave., in Los Altos.

Teacher Jennifer Bell led a jump-rope demonstration to raise the money. The first-time effort accounted for a community service project for Almond students.

LAHS singers

in holiday songfestThe Los Altos High School Main Street Singers, along with other local musicians, will perform "A Christmas Remembrance" 2 p.m. Sunday at the St. Lucy Church in Campbell.

Mark Shuall, who has performed in 21 countries, will direct the Los Altos High School Main Street Singers in the benfit concert for the Diocese of San Jose.

The Ringmasters, a group of 12 alumni from the Golden Gate Boys Chior and Bell Ringers, soloists Veronica Mcinerney of the South Bay Wailing Company Band and Ted Sanchez will also perform.

Holiday faire

at Blach school

The Blach Intermediate School will hold its annual Holiday Faire on Dec. 8 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at 1120 Coving ton Road.

This year, more than 100 students will participate by selling merchandise and handmade gifts. The crafts available at this year's faire include jewelry, holiday ornaments, baked goods, tie-dye clothing, candles and home decorations.

Each student decides what products to make as well as how to price and market them with signs and decorations. Students donate 10 percent of their earnings to the school.

The Blach Holiday Faire is open to the public.

Los Altos-Mountain View PTA

look for new members

Parent Teacher Associations nationwide are asking members of the community to join their local PTA to support their school. PTA groups focus on educational issues, as well as health, safety, parent education and legislation relating to school.

Los Altos and Mountain View residents are invited to call any one of the following neighborhood schools - Almond, Blach, Bubb, Builis, Egan, Graham, Landels, Loyola, Monta Loma, Oak, Santa Rita, or Springer, and ask for the PTA Membership Chair to answer questions about what, when, where or how to become involved.

Writing competition

for high school seniors

The Society for the Preservation of English Language and Literature (SPELL) has announced its 1995-96 Stephen J. Manhard Scholarship Essay Contest for high school seniors.

A student must write an essay that supports SPELL's objectives of promoting better English. Winning essays will be published in Spell's bimonthly publication, SPELL/Binder.

First prize is $500, second $300, and third $200. An undetermined amount of awards of $100 will be given as merited. For more information, call 966-8299.
