Police offer 'Top 12' list of do's and don'ts for shoppers

printer friendly version Print this story

Each year the Los Altos Police Department issues a set of guide rules for residents and out-of-town shoppers for the holiday season. They are:

1. Shop early and avoid the rush.

2. Shop early in the day to avoid crowds.

3. If you must shop in the evenings, shop with a friend.

4. Park in well-lighted areas, as close as possible to the store entrance. Be particularly aware of persons in the parking lot ... especially near your car.

5. Carry only the charge cards or identification that you will need. Do not carry large sums of cash.

6. Women should shop without purses. Credit cards and personal identification should be carried in a pocket.

7. If you must carry your purse, carry it close to your body and tucked under your arm.

8. Be aware of the people around you and don't allow your attention to become distracted from your purse or packages.

9. Men should carry their wallets in front or inside pockets.

10. Make frequent trips to your car to stash your packages out of sight in the trunk. Don't let yourself get overloaded with bundles.

11. Don't hesitate to contact mall or store security if you see any suspicious activity.

12. If you are the victim of a crime, report it to the police department immediately. Don't wait until you get home to call. Try to remember details about the offender (e.g., hair color, height).

For more information on how you can prevent crime this holiday season and throughout the new year, call Noreen Sorg at the Los Altos Police Department at 948-8223, ext. 119.
