Charlotte Hutchison Grispino, a free-lance writer and former Los Altos resident, died Nov. 3 of bone cancer at Lake San Marcos in San Diego County. She was 80.

The Iowa-born journalist's specialties were spiritual and human interest features and health. Her articles had appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner, Sacramento Union, San Diego Union and Guideposts Magazine.

She resided for many years in Los Altos, raising a family while her first husband, Dale Hutchison, developed and administered physical science projects at Standford Research Institute (now SRI International) in Menlo Park. When he died suddenly in 1973, a misunderstanding prevented donation of his eyes as he had intended. This prompted Charlotte Hutchison (her byline) to write a series of articles on organ donations.

In 1962, she confounded Booktasters, an ongoing Palo Alto area women's literary group. Later she served as vice president of the California Writers Club in Sacramento. Mrs. Grasping volunteered for the Braille Society and several hospice groups.

Surviving are her husband of 10 years, Joseph Grispino of Lake San Marcos (near Carlsbad); a son, Tom Hutchison of Bend, Ore.; three daughters, Patty Yates of Sunnyvale, Teri Issenmann of Mebane, N.C., and Peggy Hutchison of Riverdale, Md.; and two grandchildren, Jessica and Sara Yates of Sunnyvale.
