MV-LA district

enrollment on rise

The Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School district is nearly 100 students ahead in its attendance figures from the same time last year, according to statistics reviewed by board members at their Nov. 27 meeting.

Figures show a total district attendance of 2,898 through the month of October, compared to 2,802 at the same time last year, representing a 96-student increase.

In other Nov. 27 meeting action, the board held a public hearing regarding proposed changes to negotiated contracts with the district's teachers and classified unions. The contract, set for ratification by the board Dec. 11, calls for an across-the-board 2 percent salary increased over 1994-95. There were no comments made at the public hearing.

Loyola holding

emergency drill

Loyola Elementary School is holding an emergency preparedness drill 7 p.m. Thursday at the school, 770 Berry Ave., Los Altos.

Instructors are offering the drill as preparation for families before disaster strikes, including information from a firefighter/paramedic on what to do before during and after an earthquake.

After the presentation, emergency kits and supplies will be available for purchase. Ten percent of the proceeds go to Loyola's emergency preparedness program.

Almond school

craft faire

Almond Elementary School will hold a holiday craft faire 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the multipurpose room at the school, 550 Almond Ave., in Los Altos.

The event will feature the work of 25 local artists, including toys, handknit sweaters, jewelry, quilts and holiday decorations. An 8-by-8 space inside the multipurpose room is available for a $35 fee.

Holiday fair

at Blach school

The Blach Intermediate School will hold its annual holiday fair on Friday from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at 1120 Coving ton Road.

This year, more than 100 students will participate by selling merchandise and handmade gifts. The crafts available at this year's faire include jewelry, holiday ornaments, baked goods, tie-dye clothing, candles and home decorations.

Each student decides what products to make as well as how to price and market them with signs and decorations. Students donate 10 percent of their earnings to the school.

The Blach holiday fair is open to the public.

Los Altos-Mountain View PTA

look for new members

Parent Teacher Associations nationwide are asking members of the community to join their local PTA to support their school. PTA groups focus on educational issues, as well as health, safety, parent education and legislation relating to school.

Los Altos and Mountain View residents are invited to call any one of the following neighborhood schools - Almond, Blach, Bubb, Builis, Egan, Graham, Landels, Loyola, Monta Loma, Oak, Santa Rita, or Springer, and ask for the PTA Membership Chair to answer questions about what, when, where or how to become involved.

Writing competition

for high school seniors

The Society for the Preservation of English Language and Literature (SPELL) has announced its 1995-96 Stephen J. Manhard Scholarship Essay Contest for high school seniors.

A student must write an essay that supports SPELL's objectives of promoting better English. Winning essays will be published in Spell's bimonthly publication, SPELL/Binder.

First prize is $500, second $300, and third $200. An undetermined amount of awards of $100 will be given as merited. For more information, call 966-8299.
