Michelle Stevens, Los Altos High School

Senior Michelle Stevens has been selected by fellow classmates as District Student of the Month for her involvement in senior class activities and her dedication to the Associated Student Body.

As senior class president, Michelle began working on the senior prom last summer. Plans are underway for the prom, which will be held this spring at the Hyatt on Union Square in San Francisco. She is very busy helping the senior class to organize fund-raisers for senior activities such as the prom, the senior picnic and the senior concert. The senior float for Homecoming activities was built at Michelle's home.

A 4.0 student, Michelle became a member of the National Honor Society last year and is serving as the organization's secretary this year. She served as vice president of the junior class and is in her third year as a member of Young Life; during spring break, Michelle will be going with the group to Tijuana to build houses for the needy. For four years she has been a volunteer in the National Charity League, a mother/daughter organization. She is working for the Ecumenical Hunger relief program in East Palo Alto answering the phones both in Spanish and in English and staffing the food and clothes closet.

Taking a rigorous course load of honors calculus, Spanish and English and student government, Michelle notes that her favorite subjects are math, Spanish and English. For three years she was a member of the varsity tennis team.

Last summer, Michelle participated in the Amigos Program in Oaxaca, Mexico, as a community sanitation volunteer. Michelle felt the community was receptive of their presence and that they were treated warmly. She came away from this experience with an awareness that people live differently and that the American way of life may not be for everyone. She notes that the people of Oaxaca are happy and are unaware that there is another way of life.

During her spare time she works on senior class council activities and enjoys time with her friends.

Michelle has applied for early admission to Stanford and plans to major in either international relations or business.
