SPIKING SUCCESS: Los Altos Hills native Jenny Marchick recently completed a successful freshman volleyball season for Connecticut College. The 1995 Gunn High graduate played a crucial middle-hitter role for the Camels, who finished 17-16 overall. On the school front, she is majoring in psychology-based human relations.

TEEING OFF: Golf partners David Recht of Los Altos and Glenn Miller of San Jose recently competed for a share of the $75,000 charity purse at the seventh annual Lexus Champions for Charity National Championship in La Quinta, Calif. The twosome, which competed against 340 top amateurs from across the United States, was to donate its winnings to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

ADD LINKS: The fifth annual East-West Shrine-Buick Invitational Golf Tournament will swing into action 11 a.m. Jan. 8 at Stanford Golf Course as part of the festivities for the 71st annual East-West Shrine Football Classic and Pageant. The four-person scramble tourney, which also features a putting contest, has raised $50,000 for Shrine Hospitals the last four years. Entry deadline is Jan. 5 or when the 144 spots are filled; the $275 fee includes golf, cart, tee and door prizes, lunch and dinner. To enter, call 661-4000.

SCHOLARSHIP CENTRAL: More than 100,000 collegiate scholarships are available each year to male and female high school and junior college student-athletes. Contrary to popular belief, students don't have to be all-state to qualify. Much of this money goes unused.
