William A. Bergan

The Rev. William A. Bergan died of an aneurysm Dec. 7 at the Maryknoll residence in Los Altos. He was 81.

Bergan was born in New Britain, Conn. and attended Plainville grade and high schools and entered Maryknoll in 1930. He took his perpetual oath June 20, 1941.

Following his ordination, he earned a master's degree in philosophy from the Catholic University of America. He taught at various domestic seminaries and was assigned to Peru, where he worked in the area around Lake Titicaca. He was a Maryknoll missioner for 53 years, and retired to the Los Altos Maryknoll residence Dec. 20, 1989.

He is survived by two brothers, Martin of Falls Church, Va., and John of Middletown, Conn.; and three sisters, Helen Muska, Mary Bergan and Margaret Bergan, all of Broad Brook, Conn.

Wake services were held at the Maryknoll Residence Chapel in Los Altos Dec. 10 and funeral services Dec. 11, followed by burial under the direction of Los Altos Chapel of Spangler Mortuaries.
