He moved to Los Altos in 1964 and worked as a warehouse manager for Sunset Books and retired in 1988. His favorite pastime was golf and he made three holes-in-one at Blackberry Farm.

A homemaker for 56 years, she is survived by nephews, Richard Lutz of Los Altos and John Paul Stenbit of Pennsylvania; and niece, Mary Lou Mesa.

Charles Knight Studley

A third-generation Californian, he was born in Chico and graduated from Stanford University with an engineering degree. He worked as an engineer for Marchant, Ampex and Hewlett Packard, where he worked on the mechanical design for their first hand calculator.

William S. Patton

A member of the Palo Alto Hills Golf and Country Club, he worked for Hammermill Paper Company for 30 years. He was commissioned in the United States Army during World War II.

A registered nurse for more than 20 years, she was the widow of the late Julius Herman and is survived by four nephews and a niece.

Blanche Going

A world traveler, she was an excellent cook and loving friend and mother. She and her husband, Jim Going, lived in Los Altos from 1948 to 1963, where she was active in the Union Church. She is survived by her daughter, Diane Lee of Brentwood, Calif.; and sons, Jim Going of Seattle and Pat Going of Colorado Springs.

When Mary Burkhardt checked on the guests at the Alpha Omega shelter Christmas night, she found 15 homeless people with no Christmas dinner. There was room at the inn, the Los Altos United Methodist Church which hosted the group for December, but the cupboard was bare.

Hewlett-Packard seeks proposals for Calculator Donation Program

Hewlett-Packard Company and the Math Learning Center announced they are seeking proposals from middle and high schools in the United States and Canada for the 1996 HP38G Calculator Donation Program. The program, now in its sixth year, has granted sets of HP calculators, teaching materials and training to nearly 500 high schools. This year's program uses the new HP38G graphing calculator, HP's first calculator designed specifically for educational use. The hardware value of each grant is more than $4,000 (U.S. list).

Students appreciate Salsman de Rodriguex's cheerful attitude and her willingness to help students at any time. Coming to Los Altos three years ago from St. Francis High School, she teaches Spanish IV/V/VI AP, Spanish III and Spanish III Honors classes. In addition to teaching her classes, Salsman de Rodriguex also serves as advisor to the sophomore class, the Spanish Club, the Star Trek Club and the Coffee Club.

Open house for Los Altos Parent Preschool

Teachers will talk about the school's history, child-centered philosophy and curriculum. Current parents will share their experiences and will answer questions while prospective parents explore the facility. In addition, beginning Jan. 8 and extending throughout the month, prospective parents and their child can observe an actual day in class, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. A reservation can be made to visit classroom sessions for 3-year-olds with teacher Denny de Harne (Tuesday/Thursday) or for 4- and 5-year-olds with teacher and LAPP director Keiko Hayashi (Monday, Wednesday and Friday).
