Watercolorist

at LAH Town Hall

Local artist Carol Mead will display her watercolor paintings this Sunday through March in the Los Altos Hills Town Hall Chambers, 26379 Fremont Road.

A reception for the artist will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday in the council chambers.

Mead's watercolor paintings balance intellectual knowledge with the emotional and aesthetic response to her subject. Mead paints local scenes and architecture of California. Her most recent painting expedition was visiting France, where she followed the path of the Impressionists through Normandy, Brittany and Etretat to Monet Gardens in Giverny.

Los Altos Garden Club

to hear talk on hydroponics

The Garden Club of Los Altos will meet 12:45 p.m. Jan. 23 in the Creekside Room of the United Methodist Church at 655 Magdalena Ave., Los Altos

The subject of the meeting will be "Hydroponics." Reed Porter developed the hydroponics system for the space program, and will demonstrate how this method can be used to obtain higher yields and better quality of home garden vegetables and flowers. Handouts will be provided.

'Take Another Look'

at Catholicism

The Catholic churches in Los Altos, Mountain View and Palo Alto extend a warm welcome to non-practicing or recently returning Catholics to participate in "Take Another Look" sessions to be held Wednesday evenings, from 7:30-9 p.m. through March 13 St. Athanasius Parish Hall, 160 N. Rengstorff Ave., Mountain View.

Topics of interest include confession, marriage/divorce/annulments, the Bible, matters of conscience and the Mass.

Kids Praise Club

for after-school

Union Presbyterian Church of Los Altos is hosting an after-school club for all children 4 years through third grade.

Kids Praise Club will offer crafters, cooking, music and sharing about God's truth. The club meets Tuesday afternoons from 3:30-5 p.m. starting on Jan. 30.

There will be a registration fee and space is limited, so sign up early. Your child will receive incentives for registering before Friday. For more information, call the church office at 948-4361.

Women's Chorus

holds auditions

The 60-voice Peninsula Women's Chorus, sponsored by Foothill College, is holding auditions by appointment through Saturday. Many Los Altos and Los Altos Hills women sing with this group which specializes in serious music for women's voices from the renaissance through contemporary periods.

Rehearsals are at Cubbberly School in Palo Alto every Monday night from 7:15-10 p.m. The group competes in international choral competitions while on tour and enters national invitation-only conferences. In 1994, it won second prize at the Tallinn International Choral Competition in Estonia and in 1995 it performed with the Redwood Symphony and West Bay Opera.

Foothill Stamp Club

set to collect members

All persons interested in philately or just stamp collecting as a hobby may join Foothill Stamp Club, which regularly meets 7:30 p.m. the first and third Mondays of the month at the Community Room of Great Western Bank, 199 Main Street in Los Altos.

Dues are $10 per person, and $15 for two members from the same family.

When a fifth Monday occurs in a month, the club holds a trading session only 7:30 p.m. at The Bank of Los Altos, Suite No. 1, Third Street and Whitney. The first such session will be Jan. 29. For more information, call 964-8923 or 965-1189.

LEADers sought

for local course

Leadership Education ADvancement (LEAD), a community involvement education course sponsored by Los Altos Tomorrow: A Community Foundation, is seeking participants for its second annual information series. The six-month course is aimed at Los Altos residents in their 30s and 40s, young professionals interested in community involvement and leadership.

Class sessions will be held once a month, from 7-9:30 p.m., at various locations throughout Los Altos.

Topics to be covered include local government, education, health and social services, the arts and volunteer opportunities within those and other areas.

According to LEAD co-chair Penny Lave, the first course had 22 participants, many of whom are already becoming involved as volunteers. Those interested can call Ginny Lear at 967-8885 for more information and an application.

Widows and

Widowers Association

The Mid-Peninsula Widows and Widowers Association meets every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Los Altos Lutheran Church, 460, S. El Monte Ave., Los Altos. The MPWWA helps people begin a new life following the death of a spouse. All widows and widowers of the area are invited to attend.

Valentine's dance

The Los Altos Sertoma Club will present a Valentine's dance 7:30-10 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Los Altos Youth Center, 1 N. San Antonio Road. Music will be provided by the Los Altos Big Band. All proceeds will benefit Sertoma charities. Co-sponsors include the Los Altos Recreation Department and the Los Altos Senior Center.

Senior exemptions

from utility tax

If you are a senior citizen living in the City of Los Altos, you may be eligible for exemption from the utility user taxes found on your gas, electric, telephone, cable television, and water bills.

Basic requirements for exemption require you to be age 65 or over, reside in a household where the gross annual income of all residents does not exceed $25,200 annually and not be otherwise reimbursed for the utility charges upon which the tax is based.

Friendly Visiting Service

seeking volunteers

Friendly Visiting Service is seeking new volunteers to make weekly one-hour visits to lonely older Los Altos residents who live alone or in care homes and who have few or no family or friends in the area.

The volunteers are needed in four Friendly Visiting Service programs. An interview and four hours of training are required.

Chicken pox vaccines

available free

With chicken pox season coming, doctors at Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital are offering free vaccinations to children aged 2 to 12 who have never had chicken pox. This study will evaluate the immune response to the new chicken pox vaccine. The vaccine, blood draws and doctor visits are free.

El Camino Hospital presents,

CHADD research author

The Mid-Peninsula CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorders) presents Daniel G. Amen, M.D. psychiatrist, author and speaker known for his research at 7:15 p.m. tonight at El Camino Hospital (in the rear of the cafeteria). Amen is known for his research with SPECT brain imaging.

Wildlife Rescue

offering classes

Wildlife Rescue, Inc. (WRI) will be holding classes for people interested in nursing injured animals back to health for release into the environment.

WRI will be needing a large number of volunteers in the next few months and will offer classes to those who are interested in being trained.

WRI has a speakers bureau, which is a group of urban wildlife specialists who speak to groups of all sizes and take along animals for "hands-on" demonstrations.

Los Altos Rotaract Club

seeking new members

The Los Altos Rotaract Club, a community service group sponsored by the Los Altos Rotary Club and Rotary International, is seeking career-minded individuals between the ages of 18-35 as new members.

Through club programs, business meetings and service projects, members can develop personal and professional marketing skills.

Recently, the club has volunteered to help at local charity events.

Docent training

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is now registering volunteers for its docent program, which provides guided hikes, walks and tours to the public throughout the year.

The program attracts adults of all ages who are interested in the preservation of open space and who would enjoy learning about the natural and human history of the midpeninsula, and sharing their knowledge with others.

The Food Closet needs volunteers to help sort and carry donations, organize merchandise and hand out food bags. Volunteers may work from 9 a.m. to noon or 1:30-4:30 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays.

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District has opportunities for volunteers to help with trail and revegetation projects on its open space preserves.

Volunteer space is limited, so volunteers should call and register at least one week in advance. Training, tools and supervision are provided.

exchange student

Local families interested in hearing a new language, tasting another culture and seeing with their own eyes how easy it is to make new friends who will last a lifetime are invited to learn more about hosting a Youth For Understanding (YFU) International Exchange student.

All kinds of families are selected to host YFU students: married couples with or without children, single parents, as well as families with teenagers. Host families provide room, board, guidance and the experience of what everyday life is like in America.

City of Los Altos

seeks volunteers

Volunteers with good clerical skills are in need with the City of Los Altos in either the fire department or building department.

Good typing skills are needed to work at the fire station on a computer data entry project. Organizational skills with special attention being paid to small details is needed to help the building department prepare completed permits for microfilming.
