"Walk-fit" participants meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30-10 a.m. at the Sunnyvale Town Center. Walkers set goals and track mileage through a computer operated by a user-friendly touch screen. An on-site exercise physiologist provides motivation, group stretching activities and also checks blood pressure. The program began Jan. 8 with more than 150 participants from area communities. Methodist Church plans brunch and fashion show The Los Altos United Methodist Church women are planning a "Spring Fling" brunch and fashion show Feb. 24, 10:30 a.m., at the church located at the corner of Foothill Expressway and Magdalena Avenue in Los Altos. Fashions will be provided by LuGarre and Kids' Mart of Sunnyvale and hats from Fino Fino of Menlo Park. The proceeds from this fund raiser will be used to support charities within Santa Clara County and abroad. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $6 for children under 13. Child care will be provided. WHI director speaks to Federated Woman's Club Los Altos resident Marcia Stefanick, principal investigator of the Women's Health Initiative, will speak to the Federated Woman's Club of Los Altos at its monthly meeting noon today at the Lookout Restaurant, 605 Macara, in Sunnyvale. The Women's Health Initiative is a $628 million study involving 160,000 postmenopausal women across the country. Stefanick, who has a doctorate in reproductive physiology from Stanford, is the principal investigator at the Stanford/San Jose location of the WHI. Explorer speaks at Stegner lecture series Noted author/explorer Diane Ackerman, who has traveled to the far corners of the world to observe rare, endangered species, will take time out between adventures to lecture 8 p.m. today at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts Center, Casto and Mercy streets. Ackerman is the second speaker in a four-part lecture series honoring late author and environmentalist Wallace Stegner. The series is presented by Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST). Join the Junior League The Junior League of San Jose, which includes Los Altos in its area, announces prospective member orientations Feb. 22, 28 and March 4. Affordable housing subject of meeting The League of Women Voters of the Los Altos and Mountain View area is sponsoring a public meeting called an affordable housing update, Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Hal Brady room at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos. A panel of speakers, including city planners Carol Hoffman of Los Altos, Jim Lynch of Mountain View and Curtis Williams of Los Altos Hills will present their plans and ideas. Gary Burke, president of the Santa Clara Valley Manufacturing Group, and Scott Ward with Mozart Development Co. will also speak. Susan Russell of the Mid-Peninsula Housing Coalition will be chairwoman of the meeting. People attending may bring a bag lunch or may order a lunch for $5. Miss Greater Los Altos holding pageant The Miss Greater Los Altos Scholarship Organization, an official Miss America preliminary Pageant, will be holding a children's and teen pageant Saturday at Marti's School of Dance in Los Altos. Age categories are: Teen Miss Santa Clara, ages 13-16; Junior Miss Santa Clara (9-12); Little Miss Santa Clara (6-8); and Tiny Miss Santa Clara (3-5). Boys categories also will be available to young men between the ages of 3-16. Contestants will be judged 50 percent on talent, 25 percent on party wear and 25 percent on public speaking. In addition to prizes, winners will be invited to the Miss Greater Los Altos competition March 24. Deadline for entering the contest is Thursday and the entrant's fee is $50. Watercolorist at LAH Town Hall Local artist Carol Mead will display her watercolor paintings through March in the Los Altos Hills Town Hall Chambers, 26379 Fremont Road. Mead's watercolor paintings balance intellectual knowledge with the emotional and aesthetic response to her subject. Mead paints local scenes and architecture of California. Her most recent painting expedition was visiting France, where she followed the path of the Impressionists through Normandy, Brittany and Etretat to Monet Gardens in Giverny. Senior exemptions from utility tax If you are a senior citizen living in the City of Los Altos, you may be eligible for exemption from the utility user taxes found on your gas, electric, telephone, cable television, and water bills. Basic requirements for exemption require you to be age 65 or over, reside in a household where the gross annual income of all residents does not exceed $25,200 annually and not be otherwise reimbursed for the utility charges upon which the tax is based. Friendly Visiting Service seeking volunteers Friendly Visiting Service is seeking new volunteers to make weekly one-hour visits to lonely older Los Altos residents who live alone or in care homes and who have few or no family or friends in the area. Chicken pox vaccines available free With chicken pox season coming, doctors at Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital are offering free vaccinations to children aged 2 to 12 who have never had chicken pox. Wildlife Rescue offering classes Wildlife Rescue, Inc. (WRI) will be holding classes for people interested in nursing injured animals back to health for release into the environment. WRI will be needing a large number of volunteers in the next few months and will offer classes to those who are interested in being trained. WRI has a speakers bureau, which is a group of urban wildlife specialists who speak to groups of all sizes and take along animals for "hands-on" demonstrations. For more information, call 494-7417. Los Altos Rotaract Club seeking new members The Los Altos Rotaract Club, a community service group sponsored by the Los Altos Rotary Club and Rotary International, is seeking career-minded individuals between the ages of 18-35 as new members. Docent training from MROSD The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is now registering volunteers for its docent program, which provides guided hikes, walks and tours to the public throughout the year. Volunteers needed for trail projects The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District has opportunities for volunteers to help with trail and revegetation projects on its open space preserves. Host an exchange student Local families interested in hearing a new language, tasting another culture and seeing with their own eyes how easy it is to make new friends who will last a lifetime are invited to learn more about hosting a Youth For Understanding (YFU) International Exchange student. City of Los Altos seeks volunteers Volunteers with good clerical skills are in need with the City of Los Altos in either the fire department or building department. Good typing skills are needed to work at the fire station on a computer data entry project. Organizational skills with special attention being paid to small details is needed to help the building department prepare completed permits for microfilming.
