Applications are now being accepted for the title of Mrs. Los Altos, the official city title to the Mrs. California International Pageant, which will be held June 22 and 23 in San Diego.

On the state level areas of competition include interview, aerobic wear and evening gown. There is no talent or swimsuit required.

Married women living in the Los Altos area interested in applying should submit a short biography, including birth and marriage dates and a recent photo. Send to: Mrs. California International Headquarters, 15019 N. Mayflower Drive, Fountain Hills, Ariz.

Rec Department calendars ready

The Los Altos Recreation Department catalogs of spring courses are in the mail. They may also be picked up at the libraries, City Hall and at the Rec Center.

Main-in registration begins March 11; walk-in registration begins March 25 and classes begin in April. Some classes for youth include bake a cake and decorate; beginning watercolor and drawing, Los Altos Youth Theatre auditions for "Father of the Bride" and the summer musical "Big River."

Teen/adult classes include organizing: paper management; pop piano workshop; the smart home buying workshop; and money, power and love: personal financial management.

League-A-Thon fund-raiser

The League of Women Voters of the Los Altos-Mountain View area will hold its League-A-Thon fund-raiser March 13.

Community donations assist the league in providing voter education through candidates forums, election hotlines, public meetings on issues and pulbications such as "Facts For Voters."

American Legion upcoming meeting

The next meeting of the American Legion, Post No. 558, is scheduled for 8 tonight at Legion Hall, 347 First St., Los Altos. The general membership meeting will include selection of the nominating committee for next year's post officers.

The post is also holding its 28th annual crab feed dinner 5 p.m. March 16 at Legion Hall.

Sharks exec at prayer breakfast

The second annual Los Altos Good Friday Community Prayer Breakfast will feature a message by Greg Jamison, chief operating officer of the San Jose Sharks.

Open to the general public, the Prayer Breakfast will be held April 5 at Hyatt Rickeys, 4219 El Camino Real, in Palo Alto. Last year's event at the Los Altos Golf & County Club was "sold out" so this year's breakfast has been moved to a larger facility at Rickeys, according to Paul Foerster, chairman of the lay committee that hosts the event.

The purpose of the breakfast is to "offer the members of the Los Altos community an opportunity to share in fellowship and learn of ways others have discovered the power of prayer in their lives," Foerster said. Patti Pierce, founder of Women at the Well, a Peninsula based spiritual retreat, is also scheduled to speak on prayer.

Chinese opera at MV center

A little piece of Chinese culture is coming to the Mountain View Center of Performing Arts in an "Afternoon of Chinese Opera" on March 23 at 2:30 p.m..

To coincide with the Chinese New Year celebration of the Year of the Rat, the Chinese Culture and Arts Forum is presenting two Chinese operas: "The Hero of the White Gate" and "Emperor Tang's Love Story." Both operas are performed by actors from the San Francisco area., Taipei and mainland China. The opera will be accompanied by a ten piece orchestra of Ching-Hu, Cr-Hu drums, gongs, tricord and cymbals.

The Mountain View Center of Performing Arts is located at 500 Castro St., in Mountain View and tickets are $10 at the box office.

Western painter featured at library

Acclaimed Western landscape painter Charles Pabst, who grew up in Los Altos, will be featured in an exhibition beginning Saturday at the Los Altos Main Library, 13 S. San Antonio Road.

Pabst, who has made Arizona his home since graduating from Arizona State University in 1972, is known for work that displays breathtaking desert scenery in vivid, bright colors. A full-time fine artist since 1978, his awards include Best of Show, Hallmark Award, in California; Best of Show, Apache Trails Art Show, Mesa, Ariz., and Gold Medal Artist, 1993-95, The May Gallery, Scottsdale, Ariz. His work is included in the collections of such celebrities as Burt Reynolds and Juliet Prowse.

League sponsors candidates night

The League of Women Voters of Palo Altos presents candidates for two seats on the March 26 primary ballot during a candidates night forum tonight at the Unitarian Church, 505 E. Charleston Road, Palo Alto.

Featured will be candidates for the 5th Supervisorial District of Santa Clara County, which includes Los Altos, and candidates for the 11th state Senatorial District.

Rec department goes to Disneyland

The Los Altos Recreation Department is offering a spring excursion to Disneyland and Magic Mountain April 18-20. The trip is open to all junior high and high school students. Cost is $135.

There is a $10 off coupon,. which expires March 22, available in the recreation department's spring brochure. The costs cover admission to both theme parks, bus transportation, overnight hotel stay, continental breakfast and supervision.

'Conversations in Color' at Gallery 9

"Conversations in Color," an exhibit of abstract acrylic transfer paintings and pastels over monotype by Bay Area artist Sydell Lewis, will be held at Gallery 9,143 Main St., Los Altos, from March 5-30. The public is invited to attend a reception for the artist on Saturday, March 9 from 3-6 p.m. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday noon to 5 p.m.

Sydell Lewis exhibits her work throughout the Bay Area and on the East Coast. Her work is in numerous private and corporate collections. She received her art training in New York City, her birthplace, at the High School of Music and Art and Cooper Union Art School. In addition, she has a chemistry degree from the University of Michigan and has had a successful scientific career.

Join the Junior League

The Junior League of San Jose, which includes Los Altos in its area, announces prospective member orientations Thursday and March 4.

The Junior League is for women under 45 years old who are interested in volunteerism.

'Take Another Look' at Catholicism

The Catholic churches in Los Altos, Mountain View and Palo Alto extend a warm welcome to non-practicing or recently returning Catholics to participate in "Take Another Look" sessions to be held Wednesday evenings, from 7:30-9 p.m. through March 13 at St. Athanasius Parish Hall, 160 N. Rengstorff Ave., Mountain View.

Topics of interest include confession, marriage/divorce/annulments, the Bible, matters of conscience and the Mass.

Foothill Stamp Club offers slide show

Foothill Stamp Club members invite collectors to view a slide program Monday at 7:30 p.m. on printing techniques provided by the American Philatelic Society.

All persons interested in stamp collecting as a hobby may join the club, which regularly meets 7:30 p.m. the first and third Mondays of the month on the second floor of Great Western Bank, 199 Main Street in Los Altos.

Dues are $10 per person, and $15 for two members from the same family.

Watercolorist at LAH Town Hall

Local artist Carol Mead will display her watercolor paintings through this month in the Los Altos Hills Town Hall Chambers, 26379 Fremont Road.

Mead's watercolor paintings balance intellectual knowledge with the emotional and aesthetic response to her subject. Mead paints local scenes and architecture of California. Her most recent painting expedition was visiting France, where she followed the path of the Impressionists through Normandy, Brittany and Etretat to Monet Gardens in Giverny.

Widows and Widowers Association

The Mid-Peninsula Widows and Widowers Association meets every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Los Altos Lutheran Church, 460, S. El Monte Ave., Los Altos. The MPWWA helps people begin a new life following the death of a spouse. All widows and widowers of the area are invited to attend.

Senior exemptions from utility tax

If you are a senior citizen living in the City of Los Altos, you may be eligible for exemption from the utility user taxes found on your gas, electric, telephone, cable television, and water bills.

Basic requirements for exemption require you to be age 65 or over, reside in a household where the gross annual income of all residents does not exceed $25,200 annually and not be otherwise reimbursed for the utility charges upon which the tax is based.

Friendly Visiting Service seeking volunteers

Friendly Visiting Service is seeking new volunteers to make weekly one-hour visits to lonely older Los Altos residents who live alone or in care homes and who have few or no family or friends in the area.

The volunteers are needed in four Friendly Visiting Service programs. An interview and four hours of training are required.

Chicken pox vaccines available free

With chicken pox season coming, doctors at Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital are offering free vaccinations to children aged 2 to 12 who have never had chicken pox. This study will evaluate the immune response to the new chicken pox vaccine. The vaccine, blood draws and doctor visits are free.

Wildlife Rescue offering classes

Wildlife Rescue, Inc. (WRI) will be holding classes for people interested in nursing injured animals back to health for release into the environment.

WRI will be needing a large number of volunteers in the next few months and will offer classes to those who are interested in being trained.

WRI has a speakers bureau, which is a group of urban wildlife specialists who speak to groups of all sizes and take along animals for "hands-on" demonstrations.

Los Altos Rotaract Club seeking new members

The Los Altos Rotaract Club, a community service group sponsored by the Los Altos Rotary Club and Rotary International, is seeking career-minded individuals between the ages of 18-35 as new members.

Through club programs, business meetings and service projects, members can develop personal and professional marketing skills.

Recently, the club has volunteered to help at local charity events.

Docent training from MROSD

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is now registering volunteers for its docent program, which provides guided hikes, walks and tours to the public throughout the year.

The program attracts adults of all ages who are interested in the preservation of open space and who would enjoy learning about the natural and human history of the midpeninsula, and sharing their knowledge with others.

History House needs docents

The History House Museum needs docents to volunteer one day every two months on either Wednesday or Saturday afternoons.

Food Closet needs volunteers

The Food Closet needs volunteers to help sort and carry donations, organize merchandise and hand out food bags. Volunteers may work from 9 a.m. to noon or 1:30-4:30 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays.

Volunteers needed for trail projects

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District has opportunities for volunteers to help with trail and revegetation projects on its open space preserves.

Volunteer space is limited, so volunteers should call and register at least one week in advance. Training, tools and supervision are provided.

Local families interested in hearing a new language, tasting another culture and seeing with their own eyes how easy it is to make new friends who will last a lifetime are invited to learn more about hosting a Youth For Understanding (YFU) International Exchange student.

All kinds of families are selected to host YFU students: married couples with or without children, single parents, as well as families with teenagers. Host families provide room, board, guidance and the experience of what everyday life is like in America.

City of Los Altos seeks volunteers

Volunteers with good clerical skills are in need with the City of Los Altos in either the fire department or building department.

Good typing skills are needed to work at the fire station on a computer data entry project. Organizational skills with special attention being paid to small details is needed to help the building department prepare completed permits for microfilming.
