49th annual pet parade features a pet grand marshal

With a little help from friends, animals of all colors, shapesand sizes will parade their sanguine personalities down Main andState streets this coming Saturday. That's the date for the 49thannual Kiwanis Pet Parade.

Starting promptly at 10 a.m. at the corner of First and Mainstreets, the wailing siren of an antique police car will set offthousands of children and their beloved pets to marching. Joiningthe pets will be local marching school bands, jazz groups, marchingunits, horses and special guests in shiny cars.

The 1996 Pet Parade will be led by special Pet Grand Marshal,Disco, the Los Altos Police Department's new German shepherd caninepatrol dog.

Special guests participating in the 1996 parade include Los AltosMayor Patti Williams, Los Altos Hills Mayor William Siegel, LosAltos City Manager Dianne Gershuny and Los Altos Kiwanis PresidentSean Gabrio.

This year, the color guard will be provided by the U.S. Air Force.Featured bands include the Los Trancos Woods Community marchingband, the Los Altos High School Marching Band, the Los Altos HomeownersLeague Jazz Band and the South Bay Traditional Jazz Society.

Special marching groups include the Westwind 4-H Club and theAdobe Animal Hospital group of marching pets.

Marchers and their pets will assemble at 9:30 a.m. near the intersectionof First and Main in an area designed for the appropriate age,neighborhood, group, school or club.

Children are encouraged to march in costume, with and withoutpets, and those children who prefer alternate methods of transportationmay use bikes, tricycles or wagons, Rollerblades or skates.

All children will receive a free button and ribbon for participating.

A lost and found headquarters will be located in the parkinglot at Neilsen's Martinizing Dry Cleaning at First and Main streets.Participants are encouraged to bring a drinking bowl for theirpets.

A pet parade contest, sponsored by the Los Altos Town Crier willfollow the parade at the Community Plaza. Volunteer judges willselect winners for the best dressed pet and owner, among othercategories.
