25 years ago in the Town Crier

As reported in the Town Crier on May 26, 1971, Audrey Fisher,

a city council member, was named recipient of the eighth annual

Community Service Award given by the Los Altos Board of Realtors.

Board President Gerald M. Schwartz praised Fisher "for all

of her efforts in helping Los Altos preserve the quality environment

which makes this area a delightful place to live."

Fisher served on the city council from 1964 and as mayor during

the years 1966, 1967 and 1968. She had been a member of the State

Health Planning Council and had been active on the original citizen's

committee to build El Camino Hospital.

It was also award time for the Los Altos PTA Council. Barbara

Emerich was recipient of the Continuing Service Award and Jim

Carter was presented with an Honorary Life Service Award.

Emerich was honored for all the time she spent in the guidance

of youth, both through PTA channels and with the county Health

Department.

Carter, Los Altos director of recreation, had moved the recreation

offerings from an insignificant program in 1960 to a thriving

schedule of some 50 different activities for all age levels.

Los Altos High School Principal Dushan (Dude) Angius announced

plans to take a sabbatical leave during the school year 1971-72.

He planned to devote the year to graduate study leading to a doctorate.

Angius had been with the Mountain View-Los Altos High School

District for 19 years. The last five of those were as principal

at Los Altos High.

50 years ago in the Los Altos News

As reported in the Los Altos News May 23, 1946, Doctor CharlesE. Clifton, a write-in candidate on the Los Altos School Boardballot, won by the overwhelming majority of 247 votes to 98. Theother members of the board were Mrs. John J. Blach and HaroldSimmons.

Local citizens met on May 14, 1946 for an open discussion onthe proposal that a Junipero Serra Boulevard extension run throughLos Altos. Just what route such a highway would take through LosAltos seemed undecided.

A citizen's welfare committee was appointed by the Los AltosBusiness Association to do battle against the proposal. The committeewas also given the responsibility of furthering the drive fora community center.

In another successful paper drive, the elementary school childrencollected 25 tons of paper and magazines. Top collector was firstgrader Peter Davison who turned in two tons.

The drive netted $300 which was used to provide playground supervisionfor summer school activities.

Many of the local elementary school students were honored inthe Latham Foundation International Humane Poster Contest. RonaldToro and Martha Schenk took top prizes in two groups and certificatesof merit were awarded to 16 other students.
