25 years ago in the Town Crier

The June 2, 1971 issue of the Town Crier estimated that a crowd

of well over 4,000 watched the Kiwanis' 24th annual Pet Parade

in downtown Los Altos. Five pages of photo coverage recorded the

parade of a thousand or more children, pets and musicians as they

marched along Main and State streets.

Al Thompson, a freshman at Los Altos High School, was another

member of Boy Scout Troop 31 who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

He continued a family tradition, following his two older brothers

and his father in attaining Scouting's highest award.

Orange Avenue near University Avenue was scheduled for a face-lift

with the addition of curbs, gutters, diagonal parking stalls,

the extension of Lincoln Park and extensive landscaping.

The city had financial cooperation in the improvement project

from adjacent churches - the St. Nicholas Catholic Church, the

First Church of Christ Scientist and the Foothills Congregational

Church.

Sixty fourth grade students from Purissima School in Los Altos

Hills gained a greater awareness of the natural environment after

taking a two-day field study on wheels.

The tour featured a study of life zones between the Bay Area

and Donner summit, where the students spent the night. The "ecology

classroom" tour was sponsored by the Bullis-Purissima Parents

Group.

50 years ago in the Los Altos News

As reported in the May 30, 1946 issue of the Los Altos News,Dalton M. Oeser was named the new manager of the Los Altos Golfand Country Club. He had been the former cafeteria manager atPernanente Metals Corp.

Among Oeser's plans for the summer were the serving of mealsaround the pool monthly dinner dances and a Wednesday night buffetfor members and families only.

Fire destroyed the Stern home on Hillway Avenue in Los Altosaround noon on May 28, 1946. The women occupying the house forthe summer were led to safety by Don Hall, the chauffeur.

After taking the women to the nearby Marini home, Hall said heattempted to get the telephone operator for 10 minutes beforehis call was answered. The fire resulted in a total loss of houseand furniture.

Los Altan Mark Carlton Stiver Jr., Mountain View High Schoolsenior, was awarded University of California's 1946 Levi Straussscholarship in the School of Letter and Sciences.

While maintaining high marks in school, Stiver also was a memberof the championship tennis team and was active in school dramatics.

Another change in store ownership on Main Street took place June1, 1946 with the sale of Los Altos Dry Goods by owners Mr. andMrs. Arthur Brooks. The new owners were Elizabeth Purse, ElsieLewis and Mary Bias. They planned to call the store "TheVillage Shop."
