Golden Eagle Sports Camp flying high on reputation

The original Golden Eagle Summer SportsCamp in Los Altos began 12 years ago with the idea of fun, instructionand strong supervision.

It earned the Best Family Camp in the Bay Area from the San JoseMercury News in 1995.

The camp is directed by its founders Monica and Nelson Lodgewho are both physical education teachers, coaches and specialistsin the field of sports and athletics. Monica is currently theathletic director at Los Altos High School and has been a gymnasticscoach for more than 25 years. Nelson is a health teacher at IrvingtonHigh School and has been a long-time soccer coach. Along withqualified directors, the camp is run by the counseling staff,known for being friendly and outgoing. All the counselors areLos Altos High School athletes, from the present or the past,and are chosen with much scrutiny.

The sports camp, for children age 5-14, is from June 17 to Aug.2. Because of the construction being done at Los Altos High School,this summer's camp will be held at Springer School, 1120 RoseAve., in Mountain View. The camp costs $125 per week for regularcamp hours between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with an extended camp availablebetween 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This summer hosts the addition of some special programs suchas optional overnight sleepovers, beach trips, Rollerblade hockey(campers need their own equipment), chess and checkers. Stillavailable are soccer, football, softball, dance, gymnastics, wrestling,volleyball, ping-pong and basketball. A free T-shirt is providedto all campers with a different design and color scheme each year.

"The camp gives us a chance to show off our local campus,"Monica said. "But, more important, is showing off our LosAltos High athletes. The great part of it is when campers we havehad since they were 5 years old enter Los Altos High School andbecome some of our best athletes."

Early registration with a $25 deposit is encouraged to get achoice of weeks.
